Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale
18 Apr 2006
250px-Maoriflag.gifMembers of the Tuwharetoa Iwi occupying land in the central North Island say they are optimistic that a proposed sale will be halted. Taurewa Marae has been established on one of the blocks currently controlled by the government body Land Corp which make up the Taurewa Sheep Station near to National Park township.

The land has been deemed surplus to government requirements and a proposal to sell the land for a development, reportedly to include luxury accommodation and a golf course, has emerged. However, residents of the marae say Land Corp officials, who recently visited the occupation, admitted the proposed sale was illegal as the land had not been first offered back to its original owners.

Stop GE with Local Body regulations
14 Apr 2006
Modified: 04:13:26 PM
ban GE logo.jpgDuring April and the start of May district and regional councils are accepting submissions for their Long Term Council Community Plans. Following on from the Waikato District Council Plan hearings GE Free Whaingaroa, based in Raglan, is encouraging people in other regions to submit to their own council that GE is an issue they need to address.

With encouragement from GE Free Northland and other groups the councils of Northland have commissioned a combination of legal reports and expert opinions that show they can regulate GMOs. GE Free Whaingaroa built on this to construct a very compelling submission in it’s attempt to get Waikato District to become the first in the country to regulate for GMOs.

"I think even we were surprised at the success we had in engaging our councillors in this issue" said John Lawson from GE Free Whaingaroa. "As a fairly conservative council they would have preferred to steer clear of the whole GE debate but after our presentation they have decided that it is no longer an option and will be doing further research of their own."

No one is illegal
10 Apr 2006
no one is illegal.jpgDawn raids by immigration officers; border guards demanding DNA and iris samples during four hour interviews; people held for four days without a warrant; applicants for refugee status facing trials based on evidence they wont be allowed to see.

The government has released a discussion paper on the Immigration Act that recommends all of the above and more. It’s all about “automating” ejection for refugees and asylum seekers who may have (wrongly, it seems) perceived Aotearoa as a safe haven from injustice.

It seems no one in Labour’s top ranks want a repeat of the Ahmed Zaoui fiasco, where an asylum seeker gets called a terrorist by the SIS, then as soon as he is out of jail becomes part of the Auckland furniture, turning up at the Music awards and other celebrity shindigs. And they certainly don’t want another sexually abused Sri Lankan teenager in this part of the world asking for help. Oh no, we can’t have that.

United Nations slams Government over Maori Rights
06 Apr 2006
hikoi_01_big.jpgA recent United Nations Report of the Special Rapporteur, Mexican Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people in New Zealand has been slammed by the Labour government as, "disappointing, unbalanced and narrow."

The report itself is a damming indictment of the state of New Zealand race relations and sets out a number of recommendations for government to undertake in order to fulfil its obligations in order to "bridge the existing gaps and consolidate the achievements obtained so far to reduce inequalities and protect Maori rights."

Aotearoa Indigenous Rights Trust Welcomes independent United Nations report

The power of international embarrassment should not be underestimated. The Report is not binding but its considered views and recommendations will be tabled at the UN and hopefully used by Maori and other fair-minded people as another tool to hold the government to account.-Moana Jackson

Louise Nicholas - we believe you
04 Apr 2006
copsrape.jpgUPDATE: A solidarity demo is taking place in Christchurch on Thursday 6 April and the women in Wellington put out a second leaflet.

On Monday morning a group of women handed out over a thousand leaflets at the Wellington Railway Station and again in Manners Mall in the afternoon informing commuters about information suppressed - and still suppressed - in the Louise Nicholas police rape case.

A spokeswoman for the group said "it has come to our attention that continuing to spread this information may negatively affect other rape survivors and this is the last thing we want. It is extremely frustrating that in this culture of secrecy we cannot even talk about why we are no longer handing out the leaflets. It is impossible for women to find justice within the misogynist legal system."

It is unsure at this point if charges will be made against those who handed out the leaflets. [ Cop Media Release ]

A dozen women protested at open day of the Royal New Zealand Police College on Saturday unfurling banners such as "We believe you Louise Nicholas" and "Cops Rape". They continued their campaign with a vigil in Cuba Mall on Tuesday.

April Fools! 50 000 Facing Benefit Cuts
01 Apr 2006
workingforfamilies.bmp
The Working for Families package of income assistance for "working families" that came into effect today has scrapped the Special Benefit which provides a much needed top up for up to 50 000 beneficaries. This mean act is set to save the government about $50 million while depriving the poorest and most vulnerable in our communities. Social Justice groups are calling todays cuts the biggest since 1991, and the Special Benefit replacement a meaner, less flexible alternative.

Why Working for Families is not working for poor families-A report by the Wellington Peoples Centre.
