Modified: 25 Nov 2004 |
Halliburton is planning to divert water from the already-endangered Great Lakes watershed in order to cover up its ineptitude in rebuilding the Iraqi water infrastructure.
In addition to the letter below being circulated by the Sweetwater Alliance in Detroit, DIRECT ACTION must be taken to stop this dangerous attempt at exploitation of our natural resources. The people of Michigan must block all efforts by corporations to drain our lakes for profit! DO NOT ALLOW THE SAGINAW PLANT TO START PRODUCTION! |

DETROIT — The only people missing from the panels of illustrious scholars, politicians and law enforcement officials at a national conference on reforming the U.S. criminal justice system Nov. 16 in Detroit were those most affected: prisoners, ex-prisoners and their families.
Sponsored by Wayne County Community College in collaboration with The Detroit News, WDIV Channel Four and the City of Detroit, the sparsely-attended conference was invitation-only. |

With the 2004 elections over we are now able to provide the community with some initial data on the amount and type of Election Coverage on the three Grand Rapids-based TV stations - WOOD TV 8, WZZM 13 & WXMI 17 [read the Election Coverage 2004 Summary].
This year’s data reflects what we have been documenting for six years, that when it comes to local races or races not deemed as “high profile” or “hotly contested,” limited or no coverage is provided. Plenty of attention is given to the Presidential race, but that information can be found in almost any media outlet. Where local TV news plays it’s most important role is in covering the local races and ballot initiatives. |

Over 12,000 gathered at the Gates of FT Benning home of the Western Hemispheric Institute for Security cooperation (WHISC) Formally known as the School of Americas, to resist U.S. Policy in Latin American and promote human rights.
This is my first year at the action; it is very diverse age and race wise. Not something I'm used to with mass actions. It seems like the majority are religious workers, such as the Catholic worker hospitality network who rented out an apartment close the Ft with free food and resting area.
A highlight for me was the Puppetistas, which has members from all over, but was made possible by the hundreds of volunteers who were just here for the action.

You must understand, a decade ago this week--when I transitioned from male to female--there wasn't really much of a "transgender community," let alone a "transgender movement." Our activist groups were new, and most of the larger LGBT organizations were still a couple years from adding a "T" on their own missions.
In 1998, when the Remembering Our Dead project begun in response to the death of Rita Hester, I wasn't expecting anyone to really care about her death, nor did I have any belief that anyone would want to hear about the sort of violence that took her life. |
