17 Sep 2004
baldemar.jpgAfter five years of a public action boycott by the Farm Labor Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO (FLOC), it has reached a precedent setting agreement with the North Carolina Grower’s Association (NCGA) and the Mount Olive Pickle Company...

Local Environmental Activists Urge City to Reconsider Spraying Neighborhoods with Pesticides
14 Sep 2004
nospray3.gifNo Spray! Nashville activists gathered today at the entrance to Lentz Public Health Center with a message for local health board officials, "Don't Spray My Neighborhood." City officials are planning to begin spraying pesticides in residential neighborhoods beginning Wednesday, September 15th because they say they have found one mosquito that was a carrier of the West Nile Virus. Last year the city spent $70,000 spraying pesticides in local neighborhoods between August and October. City Officials claim it is the most effective way of containing West Nile Virus, which they say is a public health hazard.

Making the World Safe for Fascism: Free Speech and the Worship of Civil Liberties
07 Sep 2004
Modified: 02:03:15 PM
kkk.jpgAs leftists we question or reject the sanctity of many sacred American institutions... My argument is not that the principle of free speech has no value, for it does… Instead, I argue that the right to free speech is only one right among many, and that when we raise free speech above all other rights we play into the hands of our political enemies. (First published in issue #3 of The Dawn, an anarchist communist newspaper from Oakland, California, in September of 2004.)

My Prison Reflection
02 Sep 2004
don.jpgRecently Don Beisswenger was questioned by the assistant warden as to what he was going to do upon his release. Don said he would do the same as before he entered prison. “I will fight the issues of poverty here and in Latin America and the reasons those problems exist.”

What has the government proved by this incarceration of Don? Nothing. A fine man was put into federal prison for six months for six steps. He has not been silenced—his cause is the same—to close the SOA/WHINSEC until an impartial investigation has been completed. The issue revolves around those who have been brutalized by graduates of the School of the Americas. However, his imprisonment has also highlighted the inequities of the prison system —prisoners who should not be imprisoned, but who could work, contribute and serve their sentences alternatively. Their families and communities would help them by being there for emotional support, and the families would have a breadwinner available.

One Hundred Protesters Gather at Nashville's Opryland to Protest Bush Visit
31 Aug 2004
Modified: 06:33:34 PM
crowd.jpgFor the second time in as many days, members of the Nashville Peace Coalition and broader peace community stood in public witness to the policies of the republican administration towards war and to the odious presence of the resident thief in Nashville Tennessee.

The corporate media circus was there in full regalia running around getting sound bites here and there and peaceful folks were gathered on the streets mostly holding peace signs and a few folks were holding kerry/edwards signs. The cops were there to make sure that no one walked on the street and everybody had a good time yelling at the president as the military style black van motorcade drove by. . .read more for a full story of the August 31st Bush Bash.
