Federal authorities say they're investigating the emergency landing of a Frontier Airlines plane in Las Vegas. The Federal Aviation Administration says Frontier Flight 1326 from San Diego was in the process of landing Saturday afternoon at Harry Reid International Airport when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and declared an emergency. Emergency crews extinguished a fire on the plane's right engine after it landed. Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the underside of the plane. Frontier officials say there were no reported injuries and all 190 passengers and seven crew members exited the plane using the stairs.

Campuses across the U.S. have been calmer in the wake of last spring’s protests, yet many are mired in a lingering unease. Students say they are reluctant to speak out for fear it could pit them against students, professors or employers. Social bubbles have cemented along the divisions of the war. New protest rules on many campuses raise the risk of suspension or expulsion. American universities pride themselves as being places of open discourse where students can engage across their differences. But when it comes to the war in Gaza, some students say in today’s climate, it’s easier to stay quiet.

LeBron James and his son Bronny made NBA history when they played together for the first time during the Los Angeles Lakers’ preseason game against Phoenix. LeBron and Bronny are the first father and son to play in any NBA game at the same time, let alone on the same team. The James family’s remarkable moment coincidentally happened on Bronny’s 20th birthday. Bronny James entered the game as a substitute to begin the second quarter, joining his father on the court out of the timeout.. The crowd at Acrisure Arena in the Coachella Valley cheered at the mention of Bronny’s name.

While Americans continue to struggle under high rents, as many as 223,000 affordable housing units could disappear in the next five years. Those units were built with the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, which gives developers tax credits in exchange for keeping rents low. But there is a catch. The buildings typically only need to be kept affordable for a minimum of 30 years. For the wave of construction in the 1990s, those deadlines are arriving now, threatening to eliminate affordable housing when Americans need it most. Some states are trying to stop the leakage, including with local governments or nonprofits buying the buildings to keep them affordable. But the solutions aren't airtight, leaving some renters facing huge rent increases, even eviction.

Women make up roughly half of U.S. labor union membership, but representation in top level union leadership positions has lagged, even in female-dominated industries, and particularly for women of color. But Black and Latina women are starting to gain ground, landing top positions at some of the biggest unions in the U.S. Black and Latina women, who experience a wide gender pay gap and face intersectional headwinds of both racism and sexism in their careers, are particularly attuned to inequities in the workplace and are increasingly stepping up to fight them as union leaders. In addition to focusing more attention on family-friendly benefits like parental leave and health care coverage, they have helped spur unique bargaining wins in a variety of industries.

Police in Southern California say an officer has fatally shot a man who wounded him with a knife outside a city police headquarters in what authorities called an unprovoked attack. The Santa Monica Police Department says a man in his 30s approached the male officer outside the police station around 5:20 p.m. Saturday. The man was told he would need to wait while the officer finished speaking to a resident, but then produced a knife and slashed and stabbed the officer. The officer pulled out his gun while retreating around the corner of the building and shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was released from the hospital, officials said Sunday.
