We've hooked up with the Northern Powergrid to help tackle fishing safety! Northern Powergrid serve 8 million customers across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, and together we are encouraging anglers to ‘Look Up It’s Live!’ and 'look up before you hook up' when fishing near overhead power lines, cables and poles. Every year in the UK there are cases of fishing equipment coming into contact or too close with overhead power lines, causing horrific burn injuries or even death. With power lines on wooden poles carrying voltages up to 132,000 volts, anglers are being urged to always plan ahead when fishing, and tackle safety to make sure the next catch isn't deadly. You may be wondering, why the Erie Canal is still full west of Rochester? Why is it drained already on the east side of Rochester? This is part of a Reimagine the Canals project working to boost fishing tourism in Niagara, Orleans, and Monroe Counties. The New York State Canal Corporation releases water from the Erie Canal into Lake Ontario Tributaries in Western New York for an extended period each fall to create a longer fishing season and even better angling conditions. Higher water levels entice more brown trout, steelhead, and Atlantic and Pacific salmon populations to run up streams, improving conditions for the fish and expanding opportunities for anglers. You will start to see draining finally occurring in mid-December so the banks don't erode and seasonal maintenance can occur!

Fishing is a complex and challenging task that requires careful planning and execution. Here are some guidelines to help make fishing operations more efficient and effective: - Work on the Fish from the Top Down: Start fishing operations from the top of the fish and progress downwards for a systematic approach. - Select the Strongest Catch Tool: Choose the most suitable and robust catch tool based on the specific fishing requirements. - Pull the Fish out of the Hole without Delay: Once the fish is engaged, pull it out promptly to minimize the risk of further complications or damage. - Do Not Rotate When Pulling a Fish: Avoid rotating the fishing string while pulling the fish, as it can exacerbate the problem or cause additional damage. #Copied.

In the latest on marine policy updates from the election campaigns - 👏👏 to see the Lib Dems promise to expand the blue belt of MPAs to 50% of UK territorial waters by 2030, but for this to be meaningful we need to ensure the MPAs we already have are actually protected and the system works effectively, for the planet and the people that rely on UK seas. Bottom trawling is just one of the damaging activities taking place across these areas. See more from Oceana UK 👇
Did you know bottom trawling, a destructive fishing method, is legally allowed in most of the UK’s marine protected areas? Over 33,000 hours of suspected bottom trawling took place in UK's offshore protected waters in 2023 alone. It makes no sense to call an area 'protected' whilst allowing its destruction. Wet weather leads to Scotland’s best wild salmon run in years : The 2024 Scottish Atlantic salmon run is showing significant improvement compared to recent years, according to angling expert Will Draper, Head of FishPal. FishPal is an online service that provides a platform for anglers to book fly fishing permits and access information about fishing opportunities on rivers across the UK. It connects anglers with available fishing beats (specific stretches of a river where fishing is permitted), offering real-time availability, prices, and booking options. After a slow start due to excessive rain earlier in the year, the current run is now in full swing, with rivers filled to capacity, allowing salmon to reach their traditional spawning grounds, sometimes over 60 miles inland, according to Draper. https://lnkd.in/diVxnmN6
