A long-standing, consistent trend within our Active Lives Survey is the positive relationship between activity levels and mental wellbeing. However there has been drops in average scores, with the greatest being for those who are physically inactive. As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, we have released a special report that aims to increase our understanding about the impact of sport, physical activity and movement on our mental health 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e657f7Ey #SportEngland | #ActiveLives | #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

"Think how positively sport can support greater change – on issues like the environment and climate change, on tackling and reducing inequalities in society." Hear our CEO Tim Hollingsworth's thoughts after taking part in the debate "This House would keep Politics out of Sport" at the Cambridge Union Society.
A pleasure and honour to be invited to speak at the Cambridge Union Society last evening. Our debate was "This House would keep Politics out of Sport" I led the opposition to the motion. Leaving aside whether politics can be kept out of Sport, and why some at least are keen to argue for this to protect an unsustainable status quo, the main thrust of my argument was positive. Sport is a powerful positive tool for social benefit and betterment. It plays a critical role in individual, community and nation life. It is central to our identity and to belonging. And its ability to impact positively on health and wellbeing is a significant benefit to the public purse. As Nelson Mandela put it decades ago: "Sport has the power to change the world". It was a high quality debate with excellent contributions from all six speakers. Largely thanks to the brilliant engrossing and fiercely argued contributions of my two team colleagues in opposition Adanna and Joseph the opposition prevailed and the motion defeated.

This Girl Can have launched a new campaign, Let’s Get Out There, which seeks to inspire more women to enjoy the many benefits of being active outdoors. Research has shown that women, and particularly those from culturally-diverse backgrounds, have greater barriers to accessing and enjoying outdoor spaces. That's why they are wanting to break down the barriers and encourage women to enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits to be gained from spending time in green and blue spaces.
