The American beaver is the largest rodent in the United States, growing from two to three feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) long, not including the tail. Beavers are semi-aquatic herbivores, who are well known for their ability to build dams. They are one of the few animals that can actively change an ecosystem by blocking rivers and streams with trees and mud, creating new lakes, ponds, and floodplains. They even have transparent eyelids that act as goggles to see as they swim. They travel from water to land to collect and eat tree bark, leaves, roots, and wetland plants. However, During the winter, a beaver family may not leave its lodge for up to 150 days straight. #wildlife #funfacts #beavers #waters #rivers #ecosytems

Work hard, play hard 🐋 Orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family and live in every ocean on Earth. 🌊🌍 They are highly social animals with strong and familial bonds, orcas can spend their entire lives with multiple generations of their family in the same pod, where they will hunt together while sharing responsibility in teaching and raising their calves and caring for the sick. Orcas are also matrilineal, with most pods led by a mother or grandmother orca. As one of the only mammals to go through menopause, female orcas can live to be decades older than males – which allows them to become experienced and responsible leaders. Even though their common name “killer whale” implies that they are vicious creatures (and while their prey may agree), orcas are actually very playful. #widllife #nature #orca #whale #waters #funfacts

What do you call a baby whale shark? A pup! 🐋 Today is #InternationalWhaleSharkDay! 🐋🦈 Whale sharks, the world’s largest fish, are known for their white spotted backs, but did you know each shark has a unique spot pattern? Researchers utilize specialized computer software, originally designed for star mapping, to identify individual whale sharks from photos utilizing their specific spot patterns. Their mouths have over 3,000 super-small teeth arranged in more than 300 rows (but they’re only after plankton—microscopic plants and animals). While humans attempt to drink 8 glasses of water a day, whale sharks spend nearly eight hours a day gulping around 10,000 gallons of ocean water. 🌊 Maybe slow and steady does win the race... 🏁 📸#1: Sam Farkas/NOAA Photo Contest #wildlife #whalesharks #sharks #oceans #funfacts #nature

Great horned owls are one of North America’s largest and most widespread owl species. 🦉 Despite its name, the great horned owl doesn’t actually have horns. Instead, it has tufts of feathers on either side of its head, which resemble horns or ears. They are the only raptor known to regularly hunt skunks, in part because they are bulky and aggressive as far as owls go, and because they have an under-developed (perhaps absent) sense of smell. 🦨 They have many fantastic adaptations that make them great birds of prey. Their sense of hearing is so acute that they can detect a mouse stepping on a twig from a distance of 75 feet (23 meters). Owls can move their heads up to 270 degrees (a three-quarter turn) to look in different directions. 👀 #wildlife #nature #funfacts #owls #birdsofprey #skunks
