  • Macomb County MDHHS recently partnered with several local agencies to support the community of Warren with a Prevention Resource Fair held at Renewal Church.  Macomb County MDHHS was able to supply the families with more than 120 book bags for the upcoming school year along, and more than 20 vendors supplied community residents with a variety of other resources. Community engagement continues to be a focus for Macomb County MDHHS, and they continue to look for opportunities to strengthen and support our community.

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Office of Policy and Planning is gearing up to host the second annual Social Determinants of Health Summit, themed "From Roadmap to Reality: Implementing Michigan’s Roadmap to Healthy Communities for Lasting Change." We are looking for presentations that highlight innovative approaches to addressing social determinants of health and reduce health disparities as well as shed light on multi-sector collaborations that pave the way for sustainable solutions in our communities. Possible topics for presentations include addressing health equity, community health worker best practices, innovative strategies for food security and housing stability, effective chronic disease prevention programs, and the vital role of public-private partnerships to address social drivers of health. This position functions as a Professional social caseworker, required by the Implementation Sustainability and Exit Plan (ISEP) that will primarily focus on investigation maltreatment in care through assignments in Children's Protective Services.   • Veronica Flores, a department analyst in the Children’s Services Administration, was recently recognized with a Champion of Advocacy award at the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Michigan 13th Annual Child Advocacy Conference in Detroit. This award recognizes an individual whose advocacy has made a tangible impact on their community and has helped to bring about positive change in policy, attitudes and behaviors. Veronica was selected because of her demonstrated commitment to advocating for children and families impacted by child abuse and her outstanding leadership in enhancing the partnership between MDHHS and children's advocacy centers (CACs), which serve children who are believed to be abused. Veronica, who also serves as coordinator of the Governor’s Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect, has worked in child welfare for 14 years, beginning with Children’s Protective Services. During her time at the department, she oversaw the creation of a statewide grant for CACs, and she plans and hosts the annual Governor’s Task Force Summit, which under her leadership has seen a high inclusion of CAC staff as planners, speakers and attendees.   • Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive, participated Friday with Xavier Becerra, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in a roundtable discussion of reproductive health care access. Hosted by the Detroit Health Department, the roundtable included: Christina Floyd, acting chief public health officer of the Detroit Health Department; Dr. Claudia Richardson, medical director of the Detroit Health Department; U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib; State Rep. Laurie Pothutsky; State Rep. Julie Rogers; State Sen. Mallory McMorrow; and Merissa Kovach, legislative director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan. There was also representation on the roundtable from a patient and a medical doctor. The group spoke about the importance of access to reproductive health care, what Michigan has done at the state and local levels to protect the reproductive freedom of individuals, and the need to continue these efforts and address maternal-infant health disparities.   • Employees of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently raised $11,152 through its seventh annual charity golf outing to provide enriching experiences for foster children in Ingham County. Through donations of hole sponsors, raffle items, 50/50 tickets and from 128 golfers and 16 volunteers, the OIG staff raised the money for Caring About Kids, Inc., an Ingham County non-profit organization. For more than 20 years, Caring About Kids has been providing life enriching experiences for children in foster care in Ingham County. This includes scholarships for camp, music lessons or other special events. Since 1994, the organization has spent more than $600,000 to provide foster children birthday gifts, gift certificates, trips, camps, tutoring, books, foster family outings and musical instruments through the “Share the Music” program.
