U.S. authorities say arrests for illegal border crossings from Mexico during August are expected to rise slightly from July. That would possibly end a streak of five straight monthly declines but the numbers are hovering near four-year lows. Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials tell The Associated Press that they expect about 58,000 arrests when the month ends Saturday. That represents little change from a nearly four-year low of about 56,400 in July. The tally suggests that arrests could be bottoming out after plummeting from an all-time high of 250,000 in December. The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss information that hasn't been publicly released.
California Assembly Democrats are pushing back against a last-minute push by Gov. Gavin Newsom to pass proposals aimed at cutting energy costs for Californians and reducing gas price spikes at the pump. They say they need more time to weigh the bills. That means lawmakers might reconvene for a special session after they are set to adjourn for the year on Saturday. Newsom said he was considering calling a special session if the Legislature didn't pass the proposals during its final week. The discussions mark the latest example of Newsom applying pressure to lawmakers to pass oil and gas regulations.

Young girls are buying up anti-aging products they see promoted on social media, with harmful effects for their skin — and their mental health. Girls as young as 8 are turning up at dermatologists’ offices with rashes, chemical burns and other allergic reactions to products not intended for children’s sensitive skin. Extensive data suggests a fixation on appearance also can affect self-esteem and body image and fuel anxiety, depression and eating disorders. The skin care obsession offers a window into the role social media plays in the lives of today’s youth and how it shapes the ideals and insecurities of girls in particular.
