Tips for buying a high chair
What you need to know before buying a high chair
Whether you need your baby’s high chair to fold up to save kitchen space, to pack up to take out and about, or to double up as a stylish item in your home, there’s the perfect product on the market.
Although you may love that high chair you saw with its bright design to match your kitchen, ask yourself whether it’s the most practical piece of kit for your home. If you’re struggling for space, having a large item in the way every time you need to get between rooms, may lose its appeal after a few months.
Safety is the top priority, so it’s key to make sure your choice meets the British Safety Standards, showing the mark BS 14988-1 with the kitemark logo. Check whether it has a solid base, as well as a safety harness for your baby, in case they reach over the side. The safety harness should comply with safety standard BS 6684.
If you’re buying a used high chair, remember to check the safety standards and also whether there’s ever been a product recall on the item. You can check on the Trading Standards websiteOpens a new window for recent product recalls, or Google the one you’re considering buying, to see if it’s been mentioned online.
Weaning is messy but fun. Knowing your baby is safe in a high chair that suits them, you and your home, means it’s the right choice. And it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Some of the best buys around aren't too steep, but are highly rated by mums and dads around the country.

- Our pick for: Best value high chair
It’s hard to ignore the value for money this high chair offers, and the number of parents who give it rave reviews. Sold without the tray, it’s really affordable, with the tray only adding a couple more pounds. It has a safety strap, is easy to build with just the legs being pushed into the slots, and is easy to clean, so it’s hard to beat this high chair for the price.
You can have your baby right up to the table if you want, without the tray, or with it on if that’s easier (tray sold separately). There are also added extras like cushions, if you want to create a little more comfort or your younger baby needs a bit more support. It’s even stackable if one high chair isn't enough because you have twins or more.
BabyCentre parents say
“Really well priced, easy to assemble, does what you need it to, tidies away nicely, open for tray or no tray, extendable straps, insert available. I don't get why anyone would spend more when it's so perfect and functional!”
“Cheap as chips, super easy to keep clean – you can dump it in the bath and hose it down if needs be – with no awkward cushions to get breakfast cereal welded to. There's a good reason why most cafes and restaurants use these!”
“The legs also come off easily, so you can put it in the car if you need to.”

A design classic, the Tripp Trapp has been favoured by parents since its launch in 1972. It’s true to its marketing slogan ‘the chair that grows with the child’, as the footrest and seat move up and down so you can adjust it to fit. The high chair also fits right next to the table so that your baby, toddler or older child can join in when you eat.
As well as natural and white, the Tripp Trapp also comes in other colours to suit your home – making it a stylish item you can use for years to come. The Scandi design is unlikely to date and will create a statement piece in your home.
BabyCentre parents say
“The Stokke Tripp Trapp lasts for more than 12 years! That makes it brilliant value for money – especially as I bought mine secondhand! It’s so easy to clean, and the colours are lovely. It’s just so practical and my baby is comfy too.”

- Maximum weight: 15kg
- Size: 112 x 55 x 70 cm
- Our pick for: Best reclining high chair for newborns
BabyCentre parents are big fans of this Cosatto high chair. It comes in a variety of designs, includingMister Fox (pictured), Fika Forest, Unicorn Land and Strictly Avocados. Being suitable from birth is a real bonus when you need to eat but don't want to leave your baby unattended; the reclined position allows for that. But as your baby grows, it offers the option to sit them up so they’re ready for weaning.
The comfy cushion means that, no matter your baby’s age, they’ll be happy to lie or sit in this high chair. The other bonus of this chair is that it also becomes a junior seat for your growing child; it can be adjusted to six heights, so it might be worth investing.
BabyCentre parents say
“We love it. My little boy is on the small side and we used it from when he was tiny. It reclines and has a newborn insert, giving good support. The top of the tray comes off for easy cleaning, and folding is really easy too. My little boy will be six months soon, so we haven’t started weaning yet, but he loves sitting in it already.”
“It has a reclining back for the times my son falls asleep, and has a detachable tray, which is perfect for washing. It’s super light and folds up quite slim to fit in a little cupboard.”

Suitable from 6 months, it’s foldable if you’re tight on space. And there’s a footrest for your baby so they feel a little more secure, especially when they start to grow. The tray has a one-handed release and is even dishwasher safe for messy weaning!
