Democratic governors and other officials under consideration to be Kamala Harris' vice presidential running mate are practicing a time-honored tradition in presidential campaigns. They're walking the line between open self-promotion and loyal advocacy for the potential boss in what amounts to unofficial auditions. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro campaigned for Harris on Monday outside Philadelphia. He blasted Republican Donald Trump and called Harris “damn ready" to lead. But he also showcased his own accomplishments. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear took a similar approach over the weekend. Harris is said to also be considering Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, among others.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump released new television advertisements on Tuesday as part of a multimillion dollar battle to gain the upper hand in this year’s reshaped campaign. The Harris advertisement provides highlights from her political career, dating back to her work as a courtroom prosecutor in California. Her campaign says it’s the first spot in a $50 million advertising push ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which starts on Aug. 19.   Meanwhile, Trump targets Harris for her work on migration issues, blaming her for illegal crossings, crime and drugs. The Trump campaign has so far reserved $12.2 million in television and digital ads through the next two weeks, according to data from the media tracking firm AdImpact.

As the largest wildfire in California this year approached the small town of Cohasset, Ron Ward was prepared with a sprinkler system he had just finished installing around his ranch after losing his homeowners insurance. He says the flames reached withing feet of his house and then stopped. The Park Fire was one of more than 100 large active wildfires burning in the U.S. on Monday. Officials say it has blazed through more than 575 square miles. The man arrested on suspicion of starting the fire by pushing a burning car into a gully has been charged with arson. It was unclear whether he had legal representation to speak on his behalf.

Disneyland workers have voted to ratify new contracts that include wage hikes and changes to sick leave policies after months of negotiations. Workers including ride operators, candy makers and parking attendants voted Monday to ratify the three-year contracts. Unions representing some 14,000 workers say the move will bump the minimum base wage to $24 an hour this year. The deal was reached after workers at Disney’s California theme parks and resort area authorized a potential strike. Disney welcomed the vote and says it values its workers.
