Nearly graduates of Sport Science and Coaching; I am nearly as excited as you will be for graduation on Weds. I'll be about in the courtyard (before and after the ceremony) to say well done, grab a photo or two, and get you to reflect on just how far you have come, by getting you to pen your responses to a couple of questions like those below!

Duped: A short story It's hard to be victorious when the opponent doesn't run a clean race; when their race is not the same one we show up to on the nicely paved track in the bright sunshine. We're pumped! We run our guts out, leaving pieces of us packed into the rubberized pavement. But they're not racing alongside us. They're the eager spectators capturing every footfall. They pass batons** like ancient scrolls: in the black of night, long after we've gone home, extending a finish line we'll never quite reach. Like the elder Rose said in Titanic, we'll wait "for an absolution that will never come." They don't offer a hand up after a meticulously placed hurdle catches our toe. Because they love the sweat of our brow and the blood on our knees--it's powerful training material. They don't offer Band-Aids for our scrapes or water for our parched souls. Funny, they don't even hand out those meaningless participation trophies. Instead, they pretend to stretch, callously wave, and say, "Same time tomorrow?" Only it's not a question, because they don't have to ask. We wave back excitedly, "We'll be here!" ...like little 5th graders, unknowingly agreeing to meet the bullies, our "friends," after school... ______________________ **clever little contract-concealing devices
