Again, Unilever paves the way for a transformative supply chain on Palm. Our strategy is pillared on creating impact and demonstrates this through: - 36,000 farmers with direct linkage to our small holder farmer programs - 20 million hectares of plantation covered through satellite monitoring - Technology partnerships with Google, Earthqualizer - Resulting in, that by the end of 2023, we were independently verified as being 97.5% deforestation-free for our key commodities. Unilever’s work to help create a deforestation-free supply chain is being featured in a series of short films by BBC StoryWorks in the latest The Human Component series. Our story takes you to the heart of our palm oil supply chain in North Sumatra, to show how we are investing in innovative technologies to enhance traceability and help drive a sustainable supply chain.   Using technology such as geolocation data and satellite monitoring, we gain valuable insights into the initial stages of our supply chain: where and who we source from, and where it is first processed. This level of detail allows us to directly source from areas with a lower risk of deforestation. Importantly, we can also understand better what is required to manage farms more sustainably – so we can work together with smallholder farmers locally.   By the end of 2023, we had the infrastructure, monitoring, and verification systems in place to manage a deforestation-free supply chain – and 97.5% of our palm oil, paper and board, tea, soy, and cocoa order volumes were verified deforestation-free. The film shines a spotlight on how we achieved this, with support from suppliers and partners. Last month, U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Vilsack announced the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics. The PCFWC was named in the initial draft as a prime example of public-private partnerships. The fungible nature of the commodity, high % of smallholders (>40%) and massive biodiversity / carbon sinks adjacent to these farmers combine to create a host of challenges... but also a stellar opportunity. Tetra Pak is among the latest companies to announce renewed commitments towards environmental sustainability. The company has recently introduced a framework called "Approach to Nature," which aims to halt and reverse nature loss while enhancing water security🌊. 💡From a water perspective, it's noteworthy that their value chain assessment shows that 55% of the water consumption comes from its suppliers. By 2025, the company plans for all its high-water-impact suppliers to report on water use and quality. ⏰Input suppliers often contribute significantly to food systems' carbon and water footprint.
