[Unilever Future Leaders' League 2024] Being selected as a Top 30 Finalist for the Unilever Future Leaders' League was an incredible honor. The program pushed me to new heights, both personally and professionally. Marketing case studies were new to me. As a finalist, I dove into complex challenges with a diverse group. Navigating our differences and learning to communicate effectively was a challenge. It demanded collaboration, creativity, and compromise to tackle marketing complexities together. Of course, this experience wouldn't have been the same without my amazing teammates, Atsalabi Dimas Fadillah and Larisa S. As the only 3rd year student in the team, the learnings I gained from them are invaluable. While we may not have clinched first place, for me, the real win lies in the connections I made and the irreplaceable knowledge and new skills I gained, both from the facilitators and the 29 incredible finalists. Also, the judges' feedback for me and my team was like a toolbox full of new skills, helping me refine my public speaking, analytical thinking, and teamwork skills. Huge thanks to Unilever for creating this amazing platform that pushed me out of my comfort zone and opened new doors. Honestly, when I first saw the UFLL application, a part of me hesitated. Did I have what it takes? But the "what if?" won, and it was the best decision ever. Little did I know, this program would transform me from a curious learner to a passionate leader. 'Do you know the difference in prize money between a Wimbledon Champion and Runner Up? – Before I share the story behind this question, let me set the context first. I have completed 11 years of my career in Unilever Bangladesh Limited today. This journey was full of challenges and opportunities. I always believed that the core source of my learning came from the interactions I had with people who had different perspectives and abilities. Therefore, I aim to recount a series of impactful encounters with both colleagues and influential leaders, pivotal moments that have played a substantial role in shaping my professional development and advancement. In 2013, upon joining Unilever as TTM, I had the privilege of participating in weeklong mentoring session led by one of the esteemed leaders in our industry, Mohsin Ahmed Bhai who was the acting Customer Development Director of that time. During a group session, he presented us with a P&L math problem to solve. While I responded swiftly, my answer proved to be incorrect. Upon identifying the step I had overlooked in my calculation, I instinctively remarked, 'oh! That’s a marginal error, somehow, I missed it,' reflecting my status as a recent graduate on my third day of employment. Mohsin bhai paused and posed a question: 'Do you know the difference in prize money between a Wimbledon Champion and Runner Up? The Runner Up receives exactly half (In the year 2013,16 million pound for the champion and exactly 8 million pound for the Runner Up), and the disparity between these figures represents that 'marginal Error.'’ That impactful statement resonated deeply with me, shaping my professional trajectory over the subsequent 11 years. I always Tried my level best to be that perfectionist in every role that I was given and avoid the pitfalls of 'Marginal Error' that distinguish the best from the merely good. I remain profoundly grateful for the leadership insights gleaned from such remarkable mentors, endeavoring each day to emulate those invaluable moments of guidance and inspiration. I spent a month doing merchandising work in the largest supermarket, managing oral care category. It was hard work! and I should admit I was most expensive merchandiser in the city))) But expertise I have generated gave me a DEEP UNDERSTANDING of consumer behavior (CONSUMER IS A KING), and the key growth drivers from both brand and in-store perspective. I would not be able to learn it better the other way. 2️⃣ Participating in the Leadership 2020 Program at the The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Working alongside an international team on the global mouthwash strategy and presenting it to the Colgate Palmolive CEO gave me insight into the GLOBAL COMPLEXITY of brand building, importance of CROSS-FUNCTIONAL and Team ALIGNMENT, and what it truly takes to be a GLOBAL LEADER. Most importantly I have been exposed to many world-class Thought Leaders and had a privilege to work together with outstanding team of leaders from my company, learning best leadership examples. Wrapping Up an Unforgettable First Trimester of PGDM! 🌟 What an inspiring start to my trimester with an insightful session from Suresh Narayanan, the Chairperson of Nestlé! His thoughts on leadership, innovation, and sustainability truly set the tone for my journey ahead. As I wrap up the first trimester of my PGDM journey, I am reflecting on a whirlwind of excitement, challenges, and growth. It was a mixed bag of excitement and exhaustion! Describing this journey, it was filled with late nights and early mornings, tight deadlines, and a river of submissions and presentations. Each moment, though exhausting, has been incredibly rewarding! A key insight I've gained this trimester is the importance of building good habits, inspired by James Clear’s Atomic Habits, a major realization I have made this trimester is the necessity of building and diminishing habits. The small changes can make such a big difference and that has been my new philosophy of cutting down my screen time and taking up the good old tradition of reading newspapers. This change has enriched my views and fueled deeper discussions with my peers. We also had the privilege of attending an inspiring HR conclave, where I explored innovative trends, the intervention of AI, and advanced strategies in the industry. Be it a competition of Talash or enthusiastic club activities, indulging seminars, or insightful guest sessions everything has made me in ways that I never expected. Learning teams have helped to build new skills within me as well as develop friendships, the importance of a team, and camaraderie. This journey has been an attestation to sturdiness and adaptability. I’m grateful for the knowledge gained, the insights shared, and the unforgettable memories created. Commencing her logistics career in 2012, working in the FMCG sector, Karen’s early career focused on quality management and colleague training programs. She was also the fortunate recipient of Apprenticeship Levy funding in 2019 enabling her to obtain her MSc in Supply Chain Leadership and Management from Aston University alongside her full-time role.
