Guard dogs and range riders have protected people against bears for millennia. They may offer solutions for co-existing with grizzlies as the recovered trouble-maker of the West nears ESA delisting.

Getting Yellowstone National Park bison protected under the ESA might break "the stranglehold Montana has placed on recovering wild bison." But those aren't the only bison.

No Hollywood star seems as intrinsically tied to Venice as George Clooney. Twenty-six years ago he attended his first Venice Film Festival with the instant classic “Out of Sight”; Nineteen years ago, it’s where he debuted his sophomore film, “Good Night, and Good Luck,” which earned him his first best director nomination; And 10 years ago, it’s where he exchanged vows with then Amal Alamuddin, at the Aman Venice, a five-star hotel perched alongside the Grand Canal. Clooney hasn’t had a film debut at the festival in seven years. But that clock resets next week as he returns with “Wolfs,” that reunites him with Brad Pitt.

The star-studded final night of the Democratic National Convention included a tutorial on pronouncing Kamala Harris’ name — featuring none other than the candidate’s great nieces. The actress Kerry Washington brought out the girls to lead the audience in a call-and-response. Amara, 8, told half the crowd to say “comma” and Leela, 6, told the rest to say “la.” Donald Trump frequently mispronounces Harris' name as “Ka-MAH-la,” which the vice president's supporters view as a sign of disrespect.

Journalists and industry experts are blasting a deal announced this week between the state of California and Google. Under the agreement, Google will pay up $110 million over the next five years to help keep local news organization afloat. Journalists see the agreement as a tactic for Google to avoid a mandatory fee under what could have been groundbreaking legislation. California lawmakers agreed to kill a bill requiring tech to support news outlets they profit from. The agreement comes as state government across the U.S. work to help struggling news organizations. Google says the deal will help both journalism and the AI sector in California.

Officials have cleared a growing homeless encampment at Dockweiler State Beach in Los Angeles. The cleanup operation Thursday was an effort organized by LA City Councilmember Traci Park and the county and comes more than a month after Gov. Gavin Newsom directed state agencies to urgently clear encampments on state land and threatened to take away funding from counties that don’t show improvement on tackling the homelessness crisis. The beach is part of California’s state park system, but the county provides its maintenance and lifeguard services while the city handles policing.

The largest diamond found in more than a century has been unearthed at a mine in Botswana. The country’s president showed off the fist-sized stone at a viewing ceremony Thursday. The Botswana government says the 2,492-carat stone is the second-biggest ever discovered in a mine. It’s the biggest diamond found since 1905 and weighs about half a kilogram. Officials said it was too early to value it or decided how it would be sold. Botswana, a country of 2.6 million people in southern Africa, is the second-biggest producer of natural diamonds behind Russia and has unearthed all of the world’s biggest stones in recent years. The Karowe Mine has produced four other diamonds over 1,000 carats in the last decade.
