    Exciting update from #PlantVogtle Unit 4! This week the unit achieved 100% Power! 🎉 This milestone marks the maximum energy the unit is licensed to produce in the reactor core and is the latest milestone as we work to complete Unit 4 as a reliable, emission-free new energy source for Georgia. Our teams continue to conduct testing for the unit, including safely running at various power levels and operating through real-life conditions, just as it will over the next 60 to 80 years after the unit enters commercial operation. #Vogtle #Nuclear #NuclearEnergy

  • Westinghouse is proud to support the Palisades Nuclear Plant’s landmark restart efforts! Our focus is on preparing plant conditions and its people for future operations. Westinghouse brings broad capabilities to the effort, including our advanced teaching and learning model used to train plant operators. Palisades, which closed in 2022, will be the first nuclear plant in the United States to undergo a “repower” upon receipt of approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to restart operations. Coming back online will provide hundreds of jobs, as well as safe and reliable carbon-free electricity for Michigan. Ron Timperio has been appointed Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President, Global Operations Services, and Adam Silverstein has been appointed Executive Vice President, Quality, Environment, Health & Safety. “Strong execution across our global operations coupled with the highest standards of safety and quality is critical for both our day-to-day and long-term success,” said Patrick Fragman, Westinghouse President and Chief Executive Officer. “Ron is a seasoned executive who brings to Westinghouse an unrelenting focus on performance and delivery through diverse, cross-functional experience across global industries. Westinghouse experts earlier this month shared the latest on our eVinci™ technology with the mining industry at #pdac2024, the world’s premier mineral exploration and mining convention held in Toronto, Canada. We also attended the Satellite 2024 conference and expo in Washington D.C., where we presented the AstroVinci™ microreactor's space applications.   • 📰 🌟 Our Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technology and our selection by the U.S. Department of Energy to build a 100-megawatt #EnergyStorage facility in Alaska was featured recently in a New York Times story. This facility will be powerful enough to supply ~80,000 homes with electricity for up to 12 hours at roughly half the cost of a facility that uses lithium-ion batteries. Describing our LDES solution, the New York Times writes: "The company’s technology works like a heat pump, using carbon dioxide in a supercritical state — at such high temperature and pressure that it acts like a hybrid of a liquid and a gas — to transfer heat, produced by excess electricity, into concrete blocks.     The steam generator is one of the largest and most important components of the pressurized water reactor (PWR). 🔥/🔥 A steam generator is a heat exchanger which transfers the heat energy generated in the reactor from the primary circuit water into the secondary circuit to convert the lower-pressure secondary circuit water into steam. The Olkiluoto 3 reactor building features four of these mega-scale heat exchangers. 🏋 The total weight of each steam generator is 520 t and the total height 23 m. 🧪 One steam generator comprises 5980 heat transfer tubes with a combined heat transfer area of 7960 m2. 🦾🔍 During the first annual outage of OL3, the multi-national Westinghouse Electric Company team has been performing Steam Generator primary side tube inspections with eddy current technology using the Westinghouse PEGASYS® equipment. The inspection is performed on two Steam Generator (SG20 and SG30) where 1/8 of the tubes are inspected for each SG by running the eddy current probe with help of a manipulator through each inspected tube. 🎰💻 The data acquisition is performed at site and the data analysis is done remotely by the Westinghouse team. The team is also prepared for plugging of tubes, in case the inspection results would so require. The plugs have been manufactured specifically to OL3 and approved by the Finnish Nuclear Safety Authority STUK - Säteilyturvakeskus. #nuclear #olkiluoto #annualoutage
