About us

Postpartum Support International (PSI) was founded in 1987 by Jane Honikman. The purpose of the organization is to increase awareness among public and professional communities about the emotional changes that individuals and families experience during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. PSI has members all over the world, including volunteer coordinators in every one of the United States and in 50+ countries. PSI disseminates information and resources through its volunteer coordinators, website, DVD, and annual conference. Its goal is to provide current information, resources, education, and to advocate for further research and legislation to support perinatal mental health.

Updates

  • With Maternal Mental Health Month just a few weeks away, Postpartum Support International is excited to announce the launch of our PSI Maternal Mental Health 2024 Month Campaign: We Are 1 in 5 Social Media Tool Kit, available now at https://lnkd.in/et_Aib4y. We invite you to join the #WeAre1in5 campaign and bring together the voices of PMHD survivors around the world. This year, we will share a diverse selection of stories that tell the struggles, hope, and recovery of those who have been affected by a PMHD. With your help, we hope to bring together PMHD survivor stories from different cities, cultures, religions, and countries across the globe through our social media campaign #WeAre1in5. We want every new mom to know: You are not alone. Although Perinatal Mental Health Disorders (PMHDs) affect an estimated 800,000 new parents each year, the topic of mental health can be a mystery to many. PSI wants to change the story by sharing YOUR story and breaking the silence about PMH Disorders. Browse the media kit to learn about content creation and storytelling campaign opportunities, or fill out our storytelling forum at https://lnkd.in/ege7tfD6 to submit your maternal mental health story. Visit the link in our bio to change the story by sharing YOUR story #WeAre1in5. Don't forget to shop 'We Are 1 in 5' Campaign T-Shirts and Merch. Visit the official PSI MMH Month 2024 today for 25% of your purchase to go directly towards supporting PSI. Link in bio or visit https://lnkd.in/eyT9a733.

  • Approximately 9% of women experience postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childbirth. 💙 #PTSDAwarenessDay Most often, this illness is caused by a real or perceived trauma during delivery or postpartum. These traumas could include: ✔️ Prolapsed cord ✔️ Unplanned C-section ✔️ Use of vacuum extractor or forceps to deliver the baby ✔️ Baby going to NICU ✔️ Feelings of powerlessness, poor communication and/or lack of support and reassurance during the delivery ✔️ Women who have experienced a previous trauma, such as rape or sexual abuse, are also at a higher risk for experiencing postpartum PTSD. ✔️ Women who have experienced a severe physical complication or injury related to pregnancy or childbirth, such as severe postpartum hemorrhage, unexpected hysterectomy, severe preeclampsia/eclampsia, perineal trauma (3rd or 4th degree tear), or cardiac disease. Postpartum PTSD is temporary and treatable with professional help. If you feel you may be suffering from this illness, know that it is not your fault and you are not to blame. • “The reality hit me hard. Military spouses who have recently given birth are 2.3 times more likely to experience a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD) compared to civilians in the general population. Also surprising is that 19.5% of active-duty mothers screen positive for PMADs, which is a higher rate compared to their civilian counterparts, according to research (Wayne UNC Healthcare, 2019). ” — Shakima Tozay LICSW, PMH-C, CCM, CDP® “The Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliancereveals that 1 in 5 mothers experience a maternal mental health condition. As a perinatal mental health provider, this made me wonder what more can be done to support military-connected mothers during the challenging transition into motherhood. It became clear to me that this was not just a statistic but an often-hidden battle that countless military families face.” “Military-connected mothers face unique obstacles in their transition to motherhood, including limited support and access to mental health care. According to a research study in the Journal of Military, Veteran and Family Health, stigma and career-related issues are significant barriers for military spouses seeking help for postpartum mental health issues (My Hanh Nguyen et al., 2023).” “To address this, as perinatal mental health providers, we must first listen to the stories of these mothers and advocate for improved support and resources for PMADs.” “I spoke with two mothers who have connections to the military and are passionate about advocating for better access to support and resources in this field. Their experiences hold the potential to spark positive transformation.” Read full article with interviews ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ejQv8ayT

  • Arc News Seattle (@arcseattlecw) interviewed Dr.Daniel Singley, PSI President’s Advisory Council Member for International Father’s Mental Health Day (IFMHD). Check out the recap! Founded by postpartum depression survivor Mark Williams and Psychologist and PSI Advisory Board member Daniel Singley, Ph.D., International Fathers’ Mental Health Day is held annually on the day after Father’s Day (June 17 this year) to highlight key aspects of paternal mental health. June is a time when Americans celebrate fathers. But fatherhood isn’t joyful for the thousands of dads experiencing perinatal mental health disorders (PMHDs), and many of them suffer alone. Societal norms and expectations contribute to the prevalence of these disorders. Nonprofit Postpartum Support International (PSI) is working to shatter the stigma surrounding PMHDs among fathers. Research shows: ✅ At least one in 10 fathers suffer from postpartum depression during the perinatal period, which includes pregnancy and the year following birth. Even more will experience an anxiety disorder. Free support is available at Postpartum.net. ✅ Postpartum depression and other PMHDs, including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and psychosis, affect 800,000 people a year. ✅ At least one in 10 men suffer from postpartum depression during the perinatal period, which includes pregnancy and the year following birth. ✅ As many as 50% of fathers suffer from PMHDs when their partner is suffering. ✅ As many as 18% of fathers develop a clinically significant anxiety disorder such as generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder at some point during their partner’s pregnancy or the first year postpartum. ✅ Only 25% of those who suffer get help, and many parents are unaware that what they are experiencing is normal and treatable.
