Helldivers 2 (stylised as Helldivers II) is an upcoming third-person shooter game developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game is the sequel to 2015's Helldivers, which was a top-down shooter. It is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5 and Windows on 8 February 2024.

Unlike the first game, which was a top-down shooter, Helldivers 2 is a third-person shooter.[1] Similar to the first game, players are able to select Strategems, which are air drops players can call, which include cluster bombs, sentry guns, shield generators or supply pods containing limited-use special weaponry.[2] Friendly fire is also always on. The game's armor system is inspired by real firearms fired against armored targets.[3] The game also features multiplayer with up to four players, in which they're able to "explore unique planets and complete objectives together, and upgrade your equipment through the deep progression system of Helldivers 2."[1]

Development[edit]

On December 3, 2020, Arrowhead Game Studios revealed that they were working on a new project expected to be released on PlayStation 5. It was also confirmed that the game would be a third-person shooter.[4] CEO and game director, Johan Pilestedt said, "We are incredibly excited to create a new, next-gen, co-op experience for our fans and community. We are looking for talented developers to join us on this journey and are looking forward to sharing more details about the project at a later date."[5]

On September 13, 2021, Helldivers 2 was mentioned in a GeForce Now leak.[6] The game was then teased in a TikTok post that the developers uploaded. The post show's Arrowhead's social media manager starting their workday, which is then followed by a series of posts from fans demanding them to release the game.[7] A portion of the game's trailer was then leaked,[8] but was later removed.[9]

On May 24, 2023, Helldivers 2 was announced during a PlayStation Showcase, which stated that the game would release later in 2023.[10] On July 6, 2023, a trailer showcasing gameplay of the game was released.[3][2] On July 30, 2023, rumors have stated that the game would release in October 2023.[11] During the same day, the game received a M rating by the ESRB for "blood and gore" and "intense violence".[12] On September 14, 2023, gameplay was shown in a PlayStation State of Play event. During the event, the game got an official release date set for February 8, 2024.[13] Pre-orders for the game became available on September 22, 2023.[14]
