Document Your Accomplishments: Build a record of cataloging all your achievements, completed projects, and the undertaken responsibilities. It is also useful to review the strengths of the role, so you should ask managers and other colleagues about what they wish to get from you or consider what they would be dissatisfied without, so you get an idea of what their job would be impaired without your contribution. To persuade your audience, always try to come up with concrete evidences that show measurable benefits from what you do. Expand Your Skills and Knowledge: This I will do by practicing my professional skills and continuing to acquire new skills that are beneficial to the organization.

Remember the old adage: if a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? Spoiler alert—it does. Just like your work should always be seen and heard. Throughout the year or on projects, make sure you know how your contributions bring value. Keep a log of your key contributions. Got a compliment or thank you for your work? Screenshot it or save that email. These little nuggets are gold when it’s time for reviews or salary talks. As a manager, ask for written feedback on your team's contributions. Use this to beef up year-end reviews or calibration discussions. Your team’s impact is your impact. In the end, you’re the ultimate champion of your work. Make sure everyone knows the value you and your team bring to the table.
In addition to technical prowess, your soft skills are a vital component of your professional value. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities are highly sought after in IT roles. Demonstrate how you've used these skills to lead teams, manage stakeholders, or mentor junior staff. Employers value IT professionals who not only excel technically but also contribute to a positive and productive work environment.

After having worked for 22 years in IT and cybersecurity, what i feel is that after some number of years in industry the IT as well as other professional skills are same and there is nothing very distinct in professionals unless someone has been able to work on some astonishing projects etc where he learnt some distinct skills. The key I will say after approx 10 years of experience lies in the soft skills of the individual. It is the soft skills which fetch you an appraisal, a new job offer and other opportunities. Your ability to manage team, your leadership skills, empathy for colleagues, understanding and adaptability to organisational goals and so on.....Must focus on soft skills as you progress in career
Understanding the market value of your role is essential when negotiating a higher salary. Research the typical pay range for someone with your experience and skill set in the IT industry. This information serves as a benchmark for your salary discussions and helps you set realistic expectations. When you're informed about the market rates, you can confidently argue why your desired salary is justified based on industry standards.
Building a strong personal brand can significantly boost your leverage in salary negotiations. Create a professional online presence that highlights your expertise, such as a well-maintained LinkedIn profile or a personal website showcasing your portfolio. Engage with the IT community through blogs, forums, or speaking at industry events. A respected personal brand makes you more visible and desirable to current and potential employers, reinforcing the case for a higher salary.

The market’s too competitive to let your hard work go unnoticed. You need to be seen and heard, loud and clear, but always keep it classy. Keep your LinkedIn and GitHub updated, showcasing your impact beyond just the daily grind. Boast about your expertise to the world or use the conversations to help bolster it. Jump into online communities and start commenting constructively. Be part of forums and discussions that align with your career goals. Exposure is key, but don’t get sucked into online arguments. Self-promotion is crucial, but always keep it professional. Stay away from topics that derail your image. Be calm, cool, collected, and collaborative. Make sure your online presence highlights expertise and professionalism.
Finally, honing your negotiation skills is critical when discussing salary increases. Approach the conversation with a clear strategy, focusing on the value you bring rather than what you want to earn. Be prepared to listen and respond to your employer's perspective, finding a balance between assertiveness and flexibility. Effective negotiation is about creating a win-win situation, so aim for an outcome that recognizes your worth while aligning with the company's interests.

I have seen this from other side of the fence, wherein sometimes the candidate tells some amount and i am happy to hear that as i was prepared to often to pay much much more. So my recommendation is that dont open your card in the beginning by quoting an amount, let the offer come from the other side and then you may start negotiating to take it upwards. Further, always dont go for the dollar in the salary slip, also consider other benefits which the organisation is keen to offer say car lease, equity share, health benefits, on campus house etc. Negotiate on a broad scale and dont loose because of being stubborn for an amount in salary slip while completely ignoring the perks and intangibles.

I will conclude this article by emphasising on what is commonly referred as 3Ps. These 3 Ps are Place, Position and Pay. What i have seen with my friends when you get two also as per your choice you should be happy. If you want place of your choice, you may have to sacrifice position and pay at times and similarly if you want high pay you may be required to relocate and so on. So high pay would require some sacrifices in terms of relocation, giving extra time to acquiring new skill sets, extensive networking and so on. So while you think and everyone thinks of higher pay packages but be prepared to walk that extra mile for it. If you are ready, then sky is the limit.
