What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The purpose of Postpartum Support International is to increase awareness among public and professional communities about the emotional changes that women experience during pregnancy and postpartum. Approximately 15% of all women will experience postpartum depression following the birth of a child. Up to 10% will experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy. When the mental health of the mother is compromised, it affects the entire family.

Internationally recognized evidence-based training program for health providers and social support networks. We have created an expert corps of experienced trainers and are committed to providing you with the most current research.

The PSI 2-day Certificate of Completion Course, taught by experienced and engaging faculty, is a thorough and evidence-based curriculum designed for nurses, physicians, social workers, mental health providers, childbirth professionals, social support providers, and anyone interested in learning skills and knowledge for assessment, care, and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. The standardized training is updated to keep pace with the most current research and practice, and has received consistently positive reviews from diverse audiences across the U.S. and Canada.

Population(s) Served
Caregivers

Coordinators are the direct contacts and representatives of PSI in their communities. They are active volunteers who provide social support, information, reassurance, and resources to moms and their families. PSI Coordinators also build connections and support networks with area providers and educators. PSI coordinators help families in their recovery from perinatal distress by providing a vision of wellness based on solid information and experience. PSI offers training, materials, and support to assist coordinators in their ability to help the families who contact them. The coordinators do not provide medical advice or evaluation but instead offer names of healthcare providers and resources that provide those clinical services. Since its start in 1987, PSI has acted on its mission to develop worldwide parent support networks with informed and reliable volunteers. Coordinators provide parent support, advocacy, and community networking but they are not required to be healthcare professionals. Many of our volunteers are men and women who have personally experienced the relief that comes from connecting with an informed and understanding person. We do have many volunteers who also have healthcare careers or education, but they are providing social support when in touch with a family through PSI.

Data
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
