    The NCOE board should determine what conditions its staff has laid out that are vital to Mayacamas’ success – the ones that can be logically done now – and demand its petitioners fix them by its next meeting. If they can't do it, reject it. 

    The twists and turns regarding the fate of the Mayacamas charter school have been exhausting, the editorial board writes. Though perhaps frustrating that the Napa County Office of Education board pushed its vote this week, we believe they were right to do so as a lot of questions remain unanswered. 

    The editorial board applauds the opening of the former Motel 6 in north Napa for the area's unhoused residents. However, they urge that it be seen as the first step in a very long process toward fixing the issue of homelessness and affordability. 

    Napa is hardly a mini version of Nashville, and even if it was, our performing arts scene would still be profoundly unbalanced.

    To be a truly world-class region, our performing arts scene needs to have more: more dance, more theater, more comedy, more experimental in-your-face experiences. The main venues for that work — Napa Valley College and Lucky Penny — are mighty but have their own missions and agendas. The Lincoln Theater is currently shuttered with no reopening date.

    The city of Napa is set to usher in its first Juneteenth — a holiday that commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States — bringing with it a new milestone for inclusivity of a portion of the population that isn’t always visible and may not always feel welcomed.
