Baby development at 14 weeks
Fine, soft hair called lanugo is growing on your baby's head and body. Most of it will fall off before birth, but some may still be there when he's born.
The muscles in your baby's face start to twitch this week. This can make him squint, frown or smile. He can’t open his eyes yet but he can start to move them around.

Pregnancy symptoms at 14 weeks
You probably feel much better now than in your first trimester. Your early pregnancy symptoms are probably behind you.As your womb (uterus) moves up into your belly, the pressure on your bladder gets less. This will help you sleep better because you won’t have to get up so often at night to go to the washroom. Your pregnancy hormones are also settling down, making your breasts less painful.
For some women, morning sickness continues. Try to see what smells, times of the day or foods trigger your nausea and work around them to prevent it from getting bad. If it’s stopping you from eating and drinking well, get help from your doctor.
You may get a nosebleed from time to time in the second trimester. This happens because pregnancy hormones make your blood vessels weaker. At the same time, you have more blood in your body. This can put pressure on your blood vessels.
If your nose dries out, the vessels there can crack and bleed. You can stop your nose from drying by drinking lots of water and rubbing ghee or petroleum jelly inside your nostrils. If the air is very dry, use a steamer or humidifier in your room at night.
What you can do at 14 weeks pregnant
Your second trimester is a good time to get into a prenatal exercise routine. Some very good exercises to do in pregnancy are:
- Swimming - The water takes the weight of your baby bump off your back and allows you to exercise all your muscles gently.
- Walking - You won’t need to buy anything or take a special class to walk daily. And it will help tone your muscles and build your stamina.
- Prenatal yoga - Gentle yoga poses can stretch your muscles and ease aches and pains.
- Pelvic floor exercises - As your bump grows and gets heavier, your pelvic floor will come under pressure. Pelvic floor exercises, also called Kegels, strengthen your pelvic muscles so that they can support your womb better. Stronger pelvic muscles will also help prevent urine leaks.
Your pregnancy diet at 14 weeks
Your doctor might ask you to stop your folic acid tablets now and replace them with iron and calcium tablets. Some women need to continue with folic acid their whole pregnancy. Your doctor will judge what is best for you based on your specific needs.
Calcium is important in the second trimester as your baby’s bones grow and start to harden. If you don’t eat enough calcium, your body will take it from your bones so that your baby grows well. This can lead to problems for you later in life.
Another important nutrient, iron, is used for many tasks like carrying oxygen to the different parts of your body. Having too little iron can lead to anaemia, which is very common in India.
Iron tablets can make you constipated. If this happens to you, don’t stop taking your tablets. Speak to your doctor, she might ask you to take a different brand that suits you better.
There is no truth in the belief that iron tablets darken your baby’s skin colour. This is just a myth.
It's important to take your calcium and iron tablets every day, but not at the same time. If you take one in the morning, take the other in the evening.
