King Charles III has expressed “greatest sorrow and the deepest regret” for the “abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence” committed against Kenyans as they sought independence. He spoke on the first day of a four-day visit to Kenya. But he didn’t explicity apologize for Britain’s actions in its former colony, as many Kenyans wanted. Kenya is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its independence this year. It and Britain have a close but sometimes challenging relationship after the prolonged struggle against colonial rule in which thousands of Kenyans died. Kenya's president told a state banquet that Britain’s response to Kenya’s quest for self-rule was “monstrous in its cruelty.”

Nearly three dozen trucks entered Gaza in the largest aid convoy since the war between Israel and Hamas began, but humanitarian workers say the assistance still falls desperately short of needs after thousands of people broke into warehouses seeking food. Meanwhile, the Gaza Health Ministry says the death toll among Palestinians passed 8,000 as Israeli tanks and infantry pursue what Israel calls a “second stage” in the war ignited by Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 incursion. The toll is without precedent in decades of Israeli-Palestinian violence. Over 1,400 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians killed during the initial attack.

Israel has knocked out communications in the Gaza Strip with bombardment and artillery fire. Explosions from continuous airstrikes overnight Friday and into Saturday lit up the sky over Gaza City for hours. The Israeli military says it is expanding ground operations in the territory. On Friday, the U.N. General Assembly called for a “humanitarian truce” in Gaza, while protesters in New York and Jakarta held demonstrations calling for an end to Israeli military action. The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has passed 7,300, and in the occupied West Bank more than 100 Palestinians have been killed. More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed and 229 people were taken hostage during the incursion and remain in captivity in Gaza.

Most of the law enforcement officers and a helicopter that surrounded a Bowdoin, Maine, home connected to suspect Robert Card left the scene Thursday after executing a search warrant. Eighteen people were killed in the shootings at a restaurant and bowling alley in Lewiston on Wednesday night. Card remained at large late Thursday night.

President Joe Biden has met with new House Speaker Mike Johnson at the White House. Johnson was joined by Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries as they discussed Biden's request for nearly $106 billion for Israel, Ukraine and other national security needs. Johnson called it a “productive meeting.” Later on Fox News, Johnson said the House would first work on a $14.5 billion aid package for Israel, but he said lawmakers would not abandon Ukraine in the war against Russia. It's been a busy first full day on the job for the Louisiana Republican who was elected Wednesday, almost a month after Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted as speaker. Johnson is a conservative ally of Donald Trump.

Authorities say the 22-year-old driver of a BMW that struck and killed four Pepperdine University students in Malibu has pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder. Prosecutors say Fraser Bohm was speeding at more than 100 mph moments before the crash. His attorney says the crash occurred as Bohm was being chased following a road rage incident. Authorities have said the driver lost control and sideswiped parked vehicles before crashing into the students walking on the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. Two others were also injured. Prosecutors say that if Bohm is convicted as charged, he could face multiple life sentences.

Among the thousands of migrants reach the U.S. border each day are many Mexican victims of organized crime who are fleeing violence and asking for protection. Some religiously affiliated shelters in Tijuana, in northern Mexico, try to provide a safe place to wait while their political asylum requests are processed. Yet often the migrants' own faith has been key for coping with the pain of leaving their homes behind and keeping their hopes alive on their journey to the United States.

Police in New York, Los Angeles, and other U.S. cities have increased patrols, authorities put up fencing around the U.S. Capitol and some schools closed amid fears of violence inspired by the Israel-Hamas war. But law enforcement officials stressed Friday there were no credible threats in the U.S. A former Hamas leader’s call for a day of rage put Jewish communities on edge, and sparked heightened security around houses of worship, schools and cultural institutions. Law enforcement officials say despite specific threats to Americans, they are on high alert for the potential for violence driven by antisemitic or Islamophobic sentiments in the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel.
