NOVA Parks - the best of Northern Virginia through nature, history, and great family experiences
About us
In the late 1950's, the Northern Virginia Planning District Commission and a group of citizens from several local jurisdictions came together to protect Northern Virginia's rich heritage of woods, meadows, lakes and streams from the threat of suburban sprawl. These citizens, working with their local governments--Fairfax County, Arlington County and the City of Falls Church--organized under the Virginia Park Authorities Act in 1959 as the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA). They came together to plan, acquire develop and operate a system of regional parks for all Northern Virginians to enjoy. Today, NOVA Parks (as the organization came to be known in 2014) represents three counties and three cities -- Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, the City of Alexandria, the City of Falls Church and the City of Fairfax. NOVA Parks staff, volunteer board members appointed from each jurisdiction and many friends of the regional parks working together have preserved over 12,000 acres of the rolling and wooded Virginia countryside for you and created a priceless legacy for future generations. Through your regional parks, the NOVA Parks provides almost two million citizens with some of the finest recreational facilities in the country. By pooling their funds, these local governments find that each dollar they contribute to NOVA Parks is multiplied by contributions from other member jurisdictions and sometimes augmented even more by state and federal grants and private donations. Being a member of NOVA Parks is a good economic investment. From a wavepool to nature trails, from golfing to boating, there's a NOVA Parks that is just right for you. Come for the day, a weekend or a week. The NOVA Parks are yours to enjoy! - NOVA Parks - the best of Northern Virginia through nature, history, and great family experiences

A donation of 85 acres of forests and fields in the Leesburg area, will become NOVA Parks’ Cattail Regional Park. The donation by Henry Harris, whose family has been stewards of the property for generations, made this addition to the regional park agency possible and saves the property from future development. Located at the corner of Edwards Ferry Road and Battlefield Parkway, the Cattail property has several unique claims to history and rare environmental features. Future plans for the property include a trail network and interpretive signs about its unique features, as well as an entrance and parking once it is open to the public. https://lnkd.in/duevjS7p #novaparks #landconservation #loudouncounty

NOVA Parks is happy to announce the addition of an all-electric Chevy Bolt to our fleet (pictured with Executive Director Paul Gilbert). NOVA Parks has also recently added electric mowers and other equipment to maintain parkland. With over 80% of the agency's 12,380 acres in forests, NOVA Parks' lands absorb nearly 10,000 metric tons of carbon every year. This natural area creates the lungs of our region, absorbing carbon and releasing oxygen. The environment is a central theme of NOVA Parks’ 2023-2027 Strategic Plan. Driving west on Rt. 50 in Loudoun County, you may breathe a sigh of relief when you reach the first roundabout and see Gilberts Corner Regional Park on your right and Mount Zion Baptist Church on your left. It is a place where the suburban sprawl of Northern Virginia recedes, the pace slows and the beauty of the rural Piedmont’s landscape emerges. This is no accident. Over 300 acres of land is conserved around Gilberts Corner, where Rt. 15 and Rt. 50 meet. NOVA Parks has partnered with the Piedmont Environmental Council for over a decade to permanently protect the land there through conservation easements, while also opening significant parts of it up for the public to use. The results of this work are evident to anyone driving by and will be for generations to come. In this video, the Executive Director of NOVA Parks, Paul Gilbert, helps us understand part of the conservation success story there. http://ow.ly/uZCW50NOQmv #earthday2023 #conservation #loudouncounty #piedmontenvironmentalcouncil #novaparks
