The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for more than 700 dams. Through our Dam Safety Program, we routinely review and monitor these dams to ensure they’re safe and reliable. National Dam Safety Awareness Day, commemorated annually on May 31, is an important reminder for why we take dam safety so seriously. It was established to recognize the failure of the South Fork Dam in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Throughout May, we’ll be talking about dams – what and where they are, what services they provide, and what dam safety means to us and for you. To get started, we’re sharing a photo of Philpott Dam, one of many dams we’re responsible for. Located in the foothills of the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, it helps manage flooding and provides power to nearby communities. Stay tuned for more on dams all through May!
