The team at Advocate Christ Medical Center and Dr. Adarsh Bhan recently were the first in the state to perform a new type of ablation therapy to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib). A traditional thermal ablation uses extreme temperatures to destroy targeted tissue in the heart associated with abnormal heart rhythms. This new technology, called the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation System by Boston Scientific, recently approved by the FDA, uses tissue-selective electrical fields to ablate cardiac tissue without risk to adjacent structure. At 34 weeks pregnant, Jatiana Silencieux and her then-fiancé, Midelson, were eagerly preparing for two momentous occasions: Their upcoming courthouse wedding and the subsequent birth of their baby boy. But their plans quickly changed when cardiac and pregnancy complications landed Jatiana at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where she underwent an emergency C-section and treatment to deliver her baby several weeks early and save her life. With their newborn, Grayson, in the neonatal intensive care unit, and Jatiana recovering in the ICU, the Advocate team sprang to action to ensure the couple could still tie the knot at the Park Ridge hospital last week. Several doctors, nurses and teammates attended the sentimental ceremony, performed by a hospital chaplain and complete with flowers, decorations, sparkling juice and wedding cakes. But for the couple, the greatest surprise was their special guest, Grayson, who was dressed in a bowtie and transported from the NICU so he could be present for his parents' marriage. While it wasn’t the wedding they had initially planned, Jatiana and her new husband wouldn’t change it for the world. “The entire Advocate team was so sincere and genuine. You could tell they all really cared and wanted to make this a special moment for us,” Jatiana says. “Not only did they put myself and my baby first as patients, but they also gave my family an unforgettable experience.” Congratulations!

The surgical team at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital recently celebrated the arrival of a third robot, called Doc Oc. This fulfills a need due to the high volume of robotic surgeries at Good Samaritan and will allow the team to help even more patients. Robotic surgeries benefit patients because they are minimally invasive and ease recovery time. Kudos to the team for their success!

This is one hoppy baby! After experiencing respiratory failure during birth, Bradley spent nine days in the neonatal intensive care unit at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge. During that time, the team made sure to take photos to help Bradley and his family commemorate his milestones, including Easter. Luckily, Bradley was able to go home in time to celebrate the holiday with his parents and three siblings. “The NICU went above and beyond my expectations. My heart felt at ease knowing my baby was being taken care of by these talented nurses and doctors,” said Bradley’s mom, Trisha. “Our family is overjoyed Bradley is home with us. Our smiling never stops.”

Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Oyinkansola Okubanjo grew up in the South Side of Chicago and remembers all the free community programs that helped shape her teen years. She recently spoke about her experience at a summit marking five years of Southland RISE – a collaborative between Advocate Health Care and UChicago Medicine. Dr. Okubanjo praised programming like the kind Southland RISE helps fund. She even credits the Live from the Heart program for sparking her interest in medicine. The program, a partnership with Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry and Advocate Christ Medical Center, gave teens the opportunity to witness a heart transplant surgery and learn about health care careers. Dr. Okubanjo now treats patients at Advocate Christ. Southland RISE (Resilience Initiative to Strengthen and Empower) is marking five years this month and integrates the violence recovery and trauma programs of the two health systems. These joint resources allow Southland RISE to foster community collaborations and create interventions, similar to what Dr. Okubanjo experienced growing up, and so far has awarded $650,000 in grants.
