What do you do if your boss in the consulting industry is not responding to your emails?

If possible , go find them and talk to them in person. Nothing fosters communication better than face to face communication. In this era of online interaction, so many have lost the art of talking, simple face to face interactions.

Before coming to conclusion first i have to see if my boss having any problems to take care at his/her personal family matter. Later may be I will send a meeting request for Lunch or High Tea...

There's no single correct answer here, but a good starting point is to slow down and think. Do I need my boss to weigh in or is there a way to proceed without having to ask for a priority shift? If input is required, I'd do my best to understand why my boss hasn't responded. A top priority for me may not be a top priority for my boss. Next I would consider options to extend the timeline like responding to the client in a way that demonstrates you've received their note, you're taking immediate action, but some time may be needed to pull together a proper response. If none of that will solve the issue, I'd try another means of communication to alert my boss and inform them of the urgency.

It is quite important to get agreements in every aspect of the consulting process and the communication is one of them. Probably , there is something that has to be agreed upon and we don´t know it.

Your e-mail should be reviewed to make sure it's short, easy to understand and that a short answer is enough to settle the points presented: yes, no, I need more information. Always propose an alternative in the e-mail: a telephone call or a meeting if necessary. If the subject is more complex, avoid long e-mails and write a decision-support note. In this case, say very little in the e-mail to encourage reading of the note, which should be no longer than one page.

In my experience, knowing the urgency of a topic, and being prepared with a few ways to solve the issue before engaging a leader is critical to not only your success in the role, but how your leader sees your ability as a consultant. As a consultant, you’re in a role where you’re compensated to provide solutions for clients. So your leader expects you to resolve issues - including your own. When I lead my prior consulting firm, my consultants learned from other tenured consultants on the first day, if you’ve got an issue, make sure you have a few potential solutions before you bring it to Suzette. They always got an audience and an answer from me if they took to the time to troubleshoot first themselves.

I dont like emailing in the first place, so if my boss is not responding he probably is like me :) Jokes aside… an email is one of the many possibilities to communicate with your boss, and most of the time i already discussed what i am about to email her/him. If still an answer is needed, i will be the one waiting with a cup of coffee at the parking lot, explaining why the response is urgently needed.

Develop a “ways of working” to establish and identify how, when, and what tools he/she prefers communicating. Do this at the beginning of the relationship. Remember, it’s not uncommon for a consultant to operate from a client’s device. Keep this in mind. It may be a simple case of them not being in the organization’s environment on a consistent, day-to-day basis. If this is the case, call or text them your need for communication. Establish a communication cadence drawn from the ways of working.

When emails don’t cut it, I’ve found scheduling a specific time to talk can be highly effective. Sending a calendar invite with a clear agenda—or proposing a few time slots—shows respect for your boss's schedule and ensures you have their undivided attention when you do meet. This method not only demonstrates initiative but also prioritizes efficiency by preparing both parties for a focused discussion on critical matters. This approach has worked seamlessly in my consulting experience, particularly when managing time-sensitive projects or when direct feedback is required.

Find a short time in your boss's diary, between 15 and 20 minutes, to focus on 2 or 3 urgent and important points. Better still, limit yourself to just 1 critical point that absolutely must be dealt with. The scarcity of your boss's available time should encourage you to think about the priorities of priorities, and prepare your strongest, most forceful arguments. But even for this short time, come up with a simple, clear and, if possible, graphic document. As the greatest of strategists (Bonaparte) said: a good drawing is worth more than a long speech.

Leveraging insights from peers has often been a cornerstone of my approach as a consultant. Colleagues can provide valuable perspective, having possibly navigated similar scenarios or understanding the unique preferences and schedule of your boss. They might suggest optimal times for communication or different strategies that worked for them. Always maintain professionalism in these discussions—aim for constructive advice rather than veering into gossip. This tactic not only helps solve immediate issues but also strengthens team cohesion by fostering a collaborative problem-solving environment.

If they are not responding its could be that they don't have an answer for you yet. Rather than reply with little to say, they are possibly just deferring. Pick up the phone and call them, leave a message, then text them to say you left a message. A live call leaves room for them to say they are not yet ready to answer you, without having committed to that in writing, on the record.

In my experience picking up a phone and calling a individual quickly resolves problems without multiple emails, follow up the call with a email just confirming what was discussed if a decision has been made .

Call me old-fashioned. Back in my day You’d find a way to sit down with your boss on-site or offsite lunch or otherwise and have a heart-to-heart about how problematic communication is becoming. Take a step back, and align on the following : -Preferred method of communication non urgent -Preferred method of communication critical -What they want to see in terms of communication and level of intensity Different leaders have different styles, needs, or desired level of involvement. As a last resort, anything having to do with revenue is a good attention grabber universallly 😂

Pick up the phone and call the person ☎️📲📞 Worked in consulting for 10+ years and people wait for responses. Just call the person and talk. Be intentional and clear in what you need so you are ready to be brief and to the point. “Hi, know you are busy. Here is what I need and why..” And when u get them on phone, confirm what is the best way to communicate with them when u need something. Most of those folks get 200-400 emails per day - a text may be a better way. But ask them!

Find your boss's schedule and wait for him to come out of a meeting to talk about your most important subject. He'll either get back to you or suggest a meeting.
