Effective work delegation is essential for consulting to be efficient. Decide which non-core tasks—like administrative or research work—you may delegate. This makes the best use possible of everyone's abilities. Invest most of your time on high-impact tasks that showcase your consulting experience, such as developing strategies and making decisions. It’s probably just a simple matrix with tasks by priority and complexity. Perhaps the high priority and low complexity tasks can be the ones that you can consider delegating. Or the opposite - up to you and type of Team you are able delegate to. So consider the task list, the people you can delegate to / their skills and what is your time most valuable spent (eg high complexity and high priority tasks).

Setting expectations with the client upfront, as a consultant, along with very clear and compelling reasoning on the need and benefits, is absolutely crucial. Often, the expectation is that the consultant will: a) bring in the expertise and experience to help solve key problems b) use it to craft the eventual solution(s), working with key organizational stakeholders as necessary c) seek inputs, but not explicitly delegate and add to the organisational workload, as often, stakeholders provide time on a stretch effort basis So it is imperative that expectations are set upfront in terms of delegation.

Depending on the task and delegates - consider what is the best way of approaching delegation. It’s a very different approach if you delegate a task to someone who has done it already 200 times vs delegating a new and challenging task to someone who you work together for the first time. Try to understand the situation and learning method for your delegates (eg see first before doing yourself). By working together and establishing what’s best for both of you - you will achieve much better outcomes

When you’re open to delegate things that others can do, you are able to utilize your time for things that people cannot do like you. Delegation is a gift.
