Here's how you can advance your career through relationship building.

Start doing conscious efforts to help, wherever you can, your teams, and professional network. its like a savings account where you deposit goodwill and trust whenever you can, it will grow with the power of compounding and will be ready for withdrawal whenever the need arises. Call someone to give an advice or to offer support, you will see that they will be in anticipation of some and will be surprise after they know that you made the efforts without any ask from your side. Plan catch up frequency ( monthly/ quarterly etc.), method ( call, LinkedIn message/ Holiday greetings etc.). Engage with people on LinkedIn and X. The main part- when you see an opportunity where network can help, don't hesitate, reach out and ask for help.

Treat everyone at work like you want to be treated. Respect, honesty and sincerity are the 3 most important things in this regard. It does not matter if the person you are interacting with is your superior, your team mate, your junior or a person who is being managed by you. The rule remains the same for every single one of them. If someone is seeking your help, help them. If someone wants your advice, hear them out. Even if it makes you stop your most important task of the day in the middle. In other words, prioritize people over your own self. Everyone should know the fact that you are one of those people whom they can always count on, and it should be true as well!

Networking and connecting with others is the best way to growth in our career! Besides, genuine interest in helping people, demonstrating empathy and being supportive! Share experiences and to be open for new challenges! And mostly important, good listener and be opened for receiving feedback!

I did a video on this not so long ago and it is a real problem. Having 20 000 connections and 40 000 followers on LinkedIn is meaningless if you do not know who they are. A bucket full of business cards is not a network. Slow down, be more deliberate and connect with people with whom you can potentially build meaningful, valuable relationships.

At work there will be many uncertain times. In such times, we need to be adaptable and show our ability to manage through despite things not going as expected. For instance- During Covid, many co-workers could not be available, so I ensured stepping up during that time and being adaptable to changing situation and being there to the extent possible for them. This created deep bonds and relationships and while establishing trust!

Be flexible and put yourself in others' shoes too. Some changes may not benefit your team but matters greatly for another department. Embrace graciously and extend assistance whenever you can to make things happen. Work together always as one organization.

There are a lot of good points in this article and building relationships in all their many forms is a key aspect of progressing your career. However, I would be wary about thinking that relationships can advance your career. The relationships may help you identify opportunities early or put you in a strong position but it will still come down to your experience, capabilities and value that you can add that will get your next role. Relationships are just one part of the equation.
