Mike Rolfes as a travel buddy (pros and cons) Recently, Mike joined me on one of my many trips to India during the year. It was great for him to experience the country, people, the cows (of course) and the food. Most importantly connecting with our people was the key item for this trip. Traveling with people (including my own family), I personally find challenging/stressful because I have traveled for so long I have a “way” I travel. So, I decided I would put together a list of the pros and cons in traveling with mike (according to me): Pros: 1. He is an excellent taste tester to tell me if something is hot or not (my team lies to me all the time - it is just a “little” spicy they tell me…lies I tell you) 2. He is low maintenance across the boards and doesn’t complain at all 3. He is full of energy regardless of lack of sleep - he can do something like 10 min naps and be ready for the world 4. He is actually a great Indian car rider and those that have been to India know. It takes a special person to sit quietly and watch your life flash before your eyes many times without using tons of swear words. 5. He eats anything! 6. He will literally talk to anyone…this might be a con but for now we will leave it here! 7. He is just a lot of fun to hang out with! Cons: 1. He travels with 2 laptops which when traveling adds a significant amount of time to the “travel schedule” with all the International check points 2. He packs way too much. You would think he had a different outfit for each day! 3. At 30 hours straight of no sleep he will pass out standing up. Actually saw this in person. 4. He is a little slow walking in the airport…come on man it is a race! 5. Because he packed too much I actually had to bring stuff home for him in my bag! 6. If you’re looking for a gym buddy…not so much. He is a solid 30%er! So our trip was a success and overall Mike is an excellent travel buddy even though the cons are close to the pros. 1Rivet - How did you get that name?   First, we hired a consulting company to help us figure out words to define who we were. At that time, it was only 30ish of us, and we had zero offshore. The consultants interviewed our clients and past clients that knew Derek Swank and I. They did an excellent job of that but also in their SOW was naming us. That part was honestly terrible. I mean terrible! So, what did we do...find another expert!   We took the words they used to describe us and we hired Phillip Davis (who is the master of naming companies). We gave Phil the words from the consulting company and he of course interviewed us. A few weeks later he was ready with his agreed upon scope of 10 names. What I love about Phil's process is he shows you a website, tagline, logo and A NAME! I remember hearing the first one and was like wow great done! Then the next one even better...on and on until the 10th name. At this point, you now have names to compare and it is easy to get to a short list. We thanked him and got off the phone! I immediately called Derek and said I like #2, #5 and #8. Derek says yeah he agreed and added 1 more but then says "Call Phil back and ask him for 5 more!" I say are you kidding me? We have 4 amazing name and clearly, we can pick one. Derek says, "Nope 5 more!" So, I call Phil and ask him for 5 more names. Of course knowing we are asking for more scope we agree on an updated contract and off goes Phil. Now what is key here is 1Rivet was NOT in the first list of 10 names. A few weeks later we get on the phone with Phil and at #12 was the name 1Rivet. The minute I heard the name I knew that was it! After a few weeks of debate we finally landed on 1Rivet! We did end up buying 2 additional names from Phil which we keep a secret just in case we need to launch a new brand.   So I did we name 1Rivet? + Nope! It was all Phillip Davis Would we be 1Rivet without Derek? + Nope! If he would not have pushed me for 5 more names we would not be #1Rivet today! So thanks SWANK!

Charleston last week with the team! If you need a pretty good team building exercise I think the spaghetti tower with duct tape was pretty fun. Of course I forgot my tape measure but no worries Derek Swank was there to help!!!
