It will likely come across as controversial, but the way that you argue for or against doing something, especially in the IT helpdesk, is explaining how doing something, or not doing something will benefit your skills as an individual, or benefit your company in terms of productivity.
You can say yes to two things, 1 is saying yes to something that’s time out of your workday and 2 is saying yes to something that’s time out of your workday and money from the company. To simplify it, let’s say 1 is Time and 2 is Time and Money.
Saying yes for 1, Time, requires that whatever activity you are trying to do during the workday, aside from your normal duties, either increases your skills in your current position, or will benefit the company. Two examples would be an IT project that adjacent to your current duties, or a cultural group/employee activity group. Both of those would either benefit the company, by helping you learn new skills or being a more engaged/happier employee, respectfully.
Saying yes for 2, Time and Money, requires that whatever activity you are doing, that involves money is a worthwhile investment for the company, such as an IT conference, or, more focused, an IT conference for your specific industry.
To be fair each company, and each industry can have wildly different ideas of what they will allow and won’t allow for both Time and Time and Money requests. This could be a very gray area, so it’s best to check with your supervisor on the specifics for your company and your department.
