If you thought 2021 was an exciting year for Canada’s baby girl name charts, you ain’t seen nothing yet! That’s right, we've crunched the numbers and analysed the data so we can reveal the top 100 baby girls’ names in Canada for 2022.
It’s all change in the top 10. Having dropped off the number one spot last year, Olivia has made the mother of all comebacks, knocking Amelia off the top to take the coveted title of Canada’s most popular baby girl name. Olivia is a Latin name, from the word olivam, meaning "olive tree". Famous English wordsmith Shakespeare was a fan of Olivia, using it as the name of a countess in his comedy Twelfth Night.

Six of last year’s top 10 names remain popular, with Sophia holding firm at second place, while Emma and Lily made advances to fourth and seventh place. Charlotte also showed sticking power, staying at number six.

They’re joined by four newcomers to the top 10, Ava, Hannah, Nora and Isabella. Ava made the shortest journey, climbing eight places to fifth, whilst Hannah jumped 12 places to eighth, Nora shifted 15 places to take ninth and Isabella soared 17 places to take the final top 10 spot.

Speaking of soaring, there’s a fair number of impressive climbers in the chart. Of these, Aurora shone the brightest, moving up 33 places to number 21. Eva also had a great year, shifting upwards 30 places to just outside the top 30. Natalie leapt up 27 places to position 52, closely followed by Addison which leaped forward 28 places to sit at 53.

Some of last year’s newbies continue to make advances. Gianna entered the baby name charts in 2021 and has climbed an impressive 20 places to position 50. Wren had a great year too, flying up 10 places to position 80.

There were 17 new entries to the 2022 chart, and 13 of them end in the letter a! Just Ruby, Rose, Josephine and Iris bucked this long-lasting trend. Lyla was this year’s highest new entry at number 43. But similar name Layla dropped 39 places to land outside the top 50.

This year’s non-movers included Chloe, which held firm at number 14, and Hazel, which stuck to position 37.

Girls’ names falling in popularity in Canada

This year, 35 names dipped in popularity. Eleanor in particular has had a rollercoaster ride - having climbed an impressive 46 places last year, it crashed down 52 places to number 64. Eliana also had a bumpy year, falling 38 places to number 88, whilst Grace fell 33 places to position 76. This year also saw a joint drop in entries for Hailey and Aaliyah which both plunged 11 places.

Leah continued its downward spiral. Having dropped 13 places in 2021, it fell a further 27 places to number 56. Madelyn and Maria, having both gained places last year, fell out of the charts completely, while Jade is only just clinging on to its top 100 spot, having fallen again from number 97 to number 99. Is it adieu to lucky Jade next year? Will Madelyn make a miraculous comeback? You’ll have to wait and see!
