Housing Affordability Institute announced a new series examining the history of zoning and exclusion in America’s housing policies. Our Exlcusionary Zoning series will draw upon the scope of Housing Affordability Institute’s programming and include legal precedents and white papers highlighting zoning’s historic use as a tool of exclusion and how those policies still impact housing affordability and access today. The first edition of this series examines Buchanan v. Why what we do is important 🚀 Exciting news for those passionate about solving housing issues! 🏡 The White House, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), has just unveiled the Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO Housing) program, spearheaded by Vice President Kamala Harris and HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman. This groundbreaking initiative kicks off with an $85 million investment, soon to be followed by an additional $100 million, aimed at enhancing homeownership and making housing more affordable and accessible. Over 20 cities will benefit from these funds, which will facilitate the construction of affordable housing by overcoming various local barriers such as high land acquisition costs and insufficient infrastructure. In places like Milwaukee, the focus will be on subsidizing developers to transform vacant lots and abandoned buildings into affordable housing. Meanwhile, in Denver, investments will help connect undeveloped land to essential services like electricity and water, making them viable for housing projects. This is part of a broader effort by President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris, who have proposed a national housing strategy to construct 2 million affordable housing units and assist families in purchasing their first homes through substantial financial support. Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced $1.5 million in Housing #MobilityRelated Services #Planning awards to 25 Public Housing Agencies (#PHAs) across 14 states. These funds enable PHAs to implement programs in their communities that help families using Housing Choice Vouchers (#HCV) find housing in better-resourced opportunity neighborhoods. The program is based on HUD's Community Choice Demonstration program, which builds upon recent research showing that growing up in neighborhoods with lower poverty levels improves children's academic achievement, long-term success, and reduces intergenerational poverty. Studies have shown that children who move to low-poverty neighborhoods experience lower rates of hospitalizations, reduced hospital spending, and some improvements in mental health over the long term. Additionally, adults who move to low-poverty neighborhoods see reductions in obesity and diabetes. CMHA was one of the 14 agencies that received funding from HUD! https://lnkd.in/ggxznCgw

Since 1974, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has played a pivotal role in shaping the evolution of affordable housing. 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of the National Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards Act, or the HUD Code, and the rise of modern manufactured housing. Enacted in 1974, the National Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards Act authorized HUD to create a uniform national building code for manufactured homes, standardizing safety and construction standards across states. This legislation and an ongoing partnership with the Manufactured Housing Institute were crucial in improving the quality, safety and livability of manufactured homes. We wanted to take a moment to celebrate that ongoing partnership and highlight the part its played in helping our industry leave the outdated “mobile home” stigma in the past. #manufacturedhousing #affordablehousing #hudcode #housing #manufacturedhousinginstitute

The most-read story from the previous week's Developer's Digest®, published by City Limits, reports on Mayor Eric Adams' advocating for his City of Yes for Housing Opportunity (COYFHO) plan to address New York City's housing crisis by increasing apartment construction through zoning reforms. The plan proposes adding residential density, especially near transit and commercial areas, but faces mixed reactions from community boards, with 27 out of 59 boards issuing unfavorable recommendations. Supporters, including Adams' administration, argue it's crucial due to the city's low 1.4% rental vacancy rate and rising homelessness. COYFHO aims to create 100,000 new homes, doubling past housing production rates. Critics are concerned about neighborhood character and affordability. 🚨 Rent Control: Does it Work?, by German Institute for Economic Research Senior Researcher Dr Konstantin A. Kholodilin New IEA analysis highlights the academic consensus that rent controls produce far more costs than benefits. Limits on how much rent can be charged can lead to reduced maintenance and a decline in the supply of rental properties. No studies looking at the effect of rent controls on housing quality have shown a positive impact, with 15 out of 20 finding that housing quality was actually harmed by the imposition of rent controls. Caps on rent disincentivize the construction of new rental properties. 11 out of 16 studies that looked at the impact of rent controls on construction show a negative effect, and 12 out of 16 studies found a negative effect on overall housing supply. "Rent control effectively reduces rents in the controlled sector, but does it at a high price. OCEN is a framework of application programming interfaces (APIs) that aims to improve access to credit for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India." - "ULI can do it for all sectors, but especially focusses on MSMEs and agricultural borrowers.
