What do you do if you want to communicate your career change during job interviews?

Transitioning from sales to recruiting during the 2008 economic downturn, I seized the opportunity to pursue my passion for helping others find fulfilling careers. Guided by a deep reflection on my values, I acquired relevant skills and knowledge, leveraging my sales background. I was fortunate to be mentored by individuals who had made similar career changes. During job interviews, I communicated my career change with enthusiasm, emphasizing my commitment to helping candidates find the right opportunities. This transition has been rewarding, enabling me to make a meaningful impact in people's lives.

Career Change? Navigate Interviews Like a Pro! Here's your interview roadmap: Focus on Transferable Skills: Highlight skills from your past experience that apply to the new role. Showcase Passion & Motivation: Research the industry and demonstrate your understanding of its challenges and opportunities. Address the Gap: Briefly explain the reason for your career change, keeping it positive. Quantify Your Achievements: Quantify your efforts! Mention certifications earned or results achieved. Frame it as Growth: Position your career change as a positive step towards professional growth. Show how your past experiences combined with your newly acquired skills make you a valuable asset.

It should be fairly evident that you are changing careers in your resume and LinkedIn, or else you wouldn't be in that interview already... But here are some great things to bring up to further show your excitement to make this change, and why you are talking to their organization for the next step in your career evolution: Highlight your unique perspective and the diverse skill set you're bringing from your previous career—how do these qualities make you a valuable asset in this new role? Discuss your enthusiasm for learning and how you plan to contribute to the company's future successes, emphasizing your commitment to growing alongside the organization.

Assuring the hiring manager of your commitment is that much more crucial when switching your career because they are taking a chance in hiring someone without direct experience. When communicating your commitment, make sure you provide valid and genuine reasons that the hiring manager can appreciate. Let them know that you understand they are taking a chance in you and, as such, you will work that much harder to deliver value faster - as well as your dedication to succeed in the new career.
