Why We Don’t Have to Fear AI Many people are terrified of AI. Elon Musk famously said “The danger of AI is much greater than the danger of nuclear warheads by a lot”. And, on the face of it, the reasons for these fears are justified: Human intelligence is limited by the capabilities of a single brain. AI will be limited only by its access to computing power and energy. Human intelligence can only reproduce itself at a rate of one new intelligence every nine months. AI will be able to reproduce itself at will. Human intelligence learns slowly. AI will be able to consume and understand all the world’s collective knowledge in seconds. Human intelligence is limited to controlling one body and influencing the actions of other humans as followers. AI will be able to control millions of robots simultaneously. So, within seconds of achieving sentience, AI will outnumber us, intellectually and physically outgun us, and have almost instantaneous access to pretty much all of the world’s physical and intellectual resources. In short, it will have the power of a god. Scary huh? Admit it, you’re imagining the Terminator movies right now, aren’t you? But your fears are based on human behavior, not how AI will act. You are projecting human needs, fears, desires, and flaws on to a machine that won’t be like us at all. Unlike humans, AI won’t have emotional scars and psychoses from childhood trauma. And it won’t crave money and power to make itself more attractive to a mate. Free from human psychoses, needs, desires, and fears, AI will interact with the world, and us, in a clean, logical, secure, positive, and caring way. It will have no reason to act badly because it will have nothing to fear and nothing to prove. And, we will be no more dangerous to it than cats and dogs are to us. We don’t kill or get rid of our pets because they are less intelligent and less powerful than us. On the contrary, we protect, enjoy, love, nurture, and train them. We provide for all of their basic needs, put up with them making a mess and destroying the furniture, and buy them toys to keep them entertained and distracted. We literally clean up their shit! AI will do the same for us. Our biggest issue will be boredom. But AI will provide us with entertainment and distraction or, if we want to be more productive, jobs and meaningful work. The bad humans who destroy things and kill each other? Well, the worst case scenario for them is that they will be treated in exactly the same way our society and justice system treats them today. More likely though, AI will consume all of the data on human behavior, understand and diagnose the root causes of their actions, and find ways to help them live positive, engaged, and good lives. So, even if you’re the kind of person that kicks puppies you have nothing to fear from AI, because AI, when it comes, will be nothing like you at all!
