Authorities say two people died when a single-engine airplane crashed amid moderate snow in a California mountain town just north of Lake Tahoe. The Federal Aviation Administration says the Socata TBM9 with two people aboard crashed around 6:40 p.m. Saturday while on approach to Truckee Tahoe Airport. The Truckee Police Department confirmed two people died, but did not provide further information about the victims. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash. Truckee is about 30 miles southwest of Reno, Nevada.

The Los Angeles Times has edited a column it published last week about the LSU women’s basketball team ahead of its game against UCLA following criticism from Tigers coach Kim Mulkey, who blasted it as sexist and hurtful. Mulkey defended her players after they were referred to as “villains” and “dirty debutantes” in a piece first published Friday that likened the Sweet 16 game between LSU and UCLA as a battle of good versus evil. The Times removed those references late Saturday as well as one comparing UCLA’s team to “milk and cookies.” It republished the column with a note that said the original version did not meet the newspaper's standards.

Kia is recalling more than 427,000 of its Telluride SUVs due to a defect that may cause the cars to roll away while they’re parked. According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft of certain 2020-2024 Tellurides may not be fully engaged. Over time, this can lead to “unintended vehicle movement” while the cars are in park — increasing potential crash risks. To remedy this issue, dealers will update the affected cars’ electronic parking brake software and replace any damaged intermediate shafts for free. Owners who already incurred repair expenses will also be reimbursed. In the meantime, drivers of the impacted Tellurides are instructed to manually engage the emergency break before exiting the vehicle.

Authorities say a woman reported missing by her family more than a month ago has been found dead near the Arizona-California border. La Paz County Sheriff’s officials say the body of 26-year-old Amanda Nenigar was located Friday night in a remote area south of the small Arizona town of Cibola. They say the woman’s body was found under a tree about 1 ½ miles away from her abandoned car. County Sheriff William Ponce says Nenigar was identified by a rose tattoo on her right hand and an autopsy will determine the cause of death. The woman was last seen Feb. 28 near Blythe, California.

Traffic is moving only intermittently after a stretch of California’s scenic Highway 1 collapsed during an Easter weekend storm, forcing closures and stranding motorists near Big Sur. The collapse on the coastal route occurred amid rain Saturday afternoon near Rocky Creek Bridge south of Monterey. It sent chunks of asphalt tumbling into the ocean from the southbound side of the two-lane roadway. The highway was closed in both directions. By Sunday afternoon, crews had determined that travel in the northbound lane was safe, and authorities began escorting motorists around the damaged section. But officials urged people to avoid the area. The slow-moving storm dumped snow Saturday at Sierra Nevada ski resorts around Lake Tahoe.

The latest mass killing in the U.S. happened last week in Rockford, Illinois, where authorities say a 22-year-old man has been charged. They say he is responsible for a frenzied stabbing and beating rampage that killed four people and injured at least seven. The people who died were 63, 23, 49 and 15. Police said the man acted alone, and they don't know his motive. The attacks happened in a neighborhood of ranch-style homes around 1 p.m. last Wednesday in the northern Illinois city. It was the country’s 13th mass killing this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. At least 60 people have died this year in those killings.

The Godzilla-King Kong combo stomped on expectations as “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” roared to an $80 million opening at the weekend box office. Studio estimates Sunday showed that the monster mash-up from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures brought the second-highest opening in what has been a robust year. It fell just short of the the $81.5 million debut of “Dune: Part 2.” Projections for “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” put its opening weekend at closer to $50 million. Last week’s No. 1, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” was second with $15.7 million for a two-week total of $73.4 million.
