Most of California's fast food workers are set to be paid at least $20 per hour. A new law mandating the minimum wage increase for fast food workers is scheduled to take effect on Monday. The increase has been cheered by workers and labor unions who say it will provide a livable wage. But some business owners say it will cause them to raise their prices or lay off workers. California's minimum wage for most other jobs has doubled to $16 per hour over the past decade. University of California-Berkeley Professor Michael Reich says employment did not fall during that time period.

Actor Chance Perdomo has died at age 27 following a motorcycle crash. He rose to fame as a star of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and “Gen V.” A statement from a publicist said no one else was involved in the crash. No details about the crash, including when and where it took place, were immediately released. Perdomo most recently played Andre Anderson on the first season of “Gen V,” the college-centric spin-off of Amazon Prime’s hit series “The Boys." One of Perdomo’s most famous roles was as Ambrose Spellman, a lead character on “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”

An Easter weekend storm has slammed into Southern California, bringing more rain and mountain snow to a region already drenched by winter weather. The slow-moving storm was expected to unleash 1 to 3 inches of rain, as well as up to 2 feet of snow in the mountains above 6,000 feet of elevation, by Monday. There were no reports of major flooding or mudslides by midday Saturday. Forecasters have issued a flood watch through Sunday afternoon in parts of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The weekend’s storm is typical weather for March.

A man accused of fatally shooting a mother and daughter in Massachusetts as they were sitting in a parked SUV has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, nearly three weeks after he was arrested in California. Twenty-seven-year-old Dejan Belnavis  was ordered held without bail at his arraignment Friday in Worcester. He was arrested on March 11 in San Diego in connection with the March 5 deaths of 27-year-old Chasity Nuñez, and her 11-year-old daughter, Zella Nuñez. Belnavis faces a hearing on May 2. He's the second man to be charged in the deaths. Authorities haven't released a potential motive for the killings or said whether there was any relationship between the men and the victims.

A federal judge sharply questions the Biden administration’s position that it bears no responsibility for housing and feeding migrant children who are waiting for agents in makeshift camps. A Justice Department attorney argued at a hearing Friday in Los Angeles that the children at the camps are not in legal custody. Being in custody would start a 72-hour limit on how long children can be held. It would also mean that Border Patrol must provide medical services and other support. The migrants are waiting in the camps for Border Patrol agents to arrest and process them.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom says hundreds of high-tech surveillance cameras are coming to the city of Oakland and surrounding freeways to battle crime. The Democrat said in a statement released Friday that 480 cameras will be deployed on city streets and surrounding state freeways to identify and track suspect vehicles in real time. Opponents say the technology infringes on privacy and will lead to further police abuse of already marginalized communities. Public safety remains a concern statewide, especially retail theft, forcing even liberal leaders of Democratic cities to embrace increased policing. In-N-Out Burger has closed its only restaurant in Oakland due to car break-ins and robberies.

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese bring a lot of star power to the Albany 2 Regional as two of the biggest names in college basketball. Clark’s Iowa squad and Reese’s LSU team would both have to win their Sweet 16 games for the two to meet in a NCAA championship rematch that drew the biggest audience in women’s basketball history last April. They’re both focused on their games at hand because it won’t be easy for either team to advance to the regional final. The top-seeded Hawkeyes face fifth-seed Colorado in a rematch of their Sweet 16 game last year. The third-seeded Tigers meet No. 2 UCLA in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Traffic is moving only intermittently after a stretch of California’s scenic Highway 1 collapsed during an Easter weekend storm, forcing closures and stranding motorists near Big Sur. The collapse on the coastal route occurred amid rain Saturday afternoon near Rocky Creek Bridge south of Monterey. It sent chunks of asphalt tumbling into the ocean from the southbound side of the two-lane roadway. The highway was closed in both directions. By Sunday afternoon, crews had determined that travel in the northbound lane was safe, and authorities began escorting motorists around the damaged section. But officials urged people to avoid the area. The slow-moving storm dumped snow Saturday at Sierra Nevada ski resorts around Lake Tahoe.

The latest mass killing in the U.S. happened last week in Rockford, Illinois, where authorities say a 22-year-old man has been charged. They say he is responsible for a frenzied stabbing and beating rampage that killed four people and injured at least seven. The people who died were 63, 23, 49 and 15. Police said the man acted alone, and they don't know his motive. The attacks happened in a neighborhood of ranch-style homes around 1 p.m. last Wednesday in the northern Illinois city. It was the country’s 13th mass killing this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. At least 60 people have died this year in those killings.

The Godzilla-King Kong combo stomped on expectations as “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” roared to an $80 million opening at the weekend box office. Studio estimates Sunday showed that the monster mash-up from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures brought the second-highest opening in what has been a robust year. It fell just short of the the $81.5 million debut of “Dune: Part 2.” Projections for “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” put its opening weekend at closer to $50 million. Last week’s No. 1, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” was second with $15.7 million for a two-week total of $73.4 million.

Authorities say two people died when a single-engine airplane crashed amid moderate snow in a California mountain town just north of Lake Tahoe. The Federal Aviation Administration says the Socata TBM9 with two people aboard crashed around 6:40 p.m. Saturday while on approach to Truckee Tahoe Airport. The Truckee Police Department confirmed two people died, but did not provide further information about the victims. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash. Truckee is about 30 miles southwest of Reno, Nevada.
