Peter Angelos (1929–2024), longtime Baltimore Orioles owner

by Eric San Juan

Peter Angelos was a prominent Baltimore attorney who became the majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles in 1993, running the team’s affairs for more than 30 years.

Peter Angelos’ legacy

Angelos is best known as the longtime owner of the Baltimore Orioles, but the sometimes-controversial owner made his name and fortune off the field as a high-powered attorney and political power broker. Born George Angelos to immigrants from Greece, he grew up in Baltimore, attended the University of Baltimore, and earned his from the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he was valedictorian.

Angelos went into practice specializing in employee liability cases, including representing thousands of shipyard workers, steelworkers, and other manufacturing workers in an asbestos poisoning suit. He also represented the State of Maryland in a suit against tobacco companies. These high-profile cases made Angelos both wealthy and powerful. He was also involved in politics, serving a short tenure on the Baltimore City Council, and in 1967 running for mayor on the city’s first integrated ticket.

He came to wider recognition among the public when, in 1993, Angelos and a group of investors purchased the Orioles. His 30-plus years overseeing the team were marked by ups and downs. He spent money on big-ticket free agents to help make the team competitive, but he was also seen as too hands-on and fickle with managers. His refusal to field replacement players during the 1995 strike won him accolades, but he was also blamed when the team’s fortunes turned ill.

Angelos was a philanthropist who donated millions to local hospitals and organizations. He was the largest individual donor to the University of Baltimore, contributed to the construction of the John and Frances Angelos Law Center, and more. He was named Marylander of the Year by the Baltimore Sun in 1998, was given the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 1996, and he was inducted into the Baltimore Sun’s Business and Civic Hall of Fame in 2016.
