“When I discovered the Neurodiversity@IBM community, that was when my whole life changed.” Aline, a former IBMer, is sharing her story on World Autism Awareness Day as she continues to drive impact and open doors to her neurodiverse peers. 💙 “I never got the chance to have higher education due to circumstances I couldn’t overcome, so I didn’t think I’d make the cut and get hired by a company like IBM — but I did, when a manager took a chance on me in 2014.” Aline ended up on a design team at IBM just three months after joining. ”Being able to work on something you truly enjoy and grow that way is quite a blessing, so I jumped into all the internal training. Everything from Agile and Design Thinking to HR processes and communication.” During her time at IBM, Aline says she experienced a life change. “I am autistic, and I really found a network of support and some incredible colleagues whom I consider my close friends to this day. When I discovered the Neurodiversity@IBM community, that was when my whole life changed. I found other IBMers just like me, neurodivergent and of all walks of life and position. I was so supported by them that I decided to lead the initiative in Spain where I hoped to really make an impact on other colleagues who hadn’t found this network. I publicly came out with my disability, a very stigmatized one, because I felt safe for once in my life saying it out loud. I just wanted to remove stigma because I knew other people like me were terrified of being themselves and maybe they could see we were in friendly territory. I honestly can’t be more thankful because IBM Spain truly embraced neurodiversity and it really did change my whole life. I even got a chance to meet with the General Manager of Spain, Portugal and Israel — and I felt like I was meeting a rockstar! Leadership support is so important for morale. Knowing I was valued despite my challenges launched me into public speaking, a TedX, a documentary on national TV, and even having contact with Spain’s government in order to promote more understanding and support for autistics and neurodiversity.” Now, at her latest role outside IBM, Aline says she continues to break glass ceilings. “I get to actively open doors for people like me into meaningful careers, and that just makes me feel whole as a person. I’m really happy where I am: I went from a girl growing up in government housing to thriving at a Big 4 company.
