The W Awards (Golden W Award and Platinum W Award) are elite accolades recognizing the highest ability to bring content to the masses. The original Golden W means that you've had content in all of the original areas of the Main Page: Today's featured article, In the news..., Did you know..., On this day..., and Today's featured picture. The Golden W predates the 2011 main page expansion plans by over a year, with only one recipient (TonyTheTiger) in that time. In 2011, both WP:FLs and WP:FSs were accepted to be added to the main page. FS eventually went inactive and never made it to the main page, but WP:TAFI was briefly added to the main page in 2013. To retain the spirit of the Golden W, a Platinum W award will be awarded to those who have added content to all areas of the main page at the time of the nomination.
For each of the main page areas, you must have been a major editor of the article and a major participant in the article's nomination for that area as applicable (POTD has no nomination and OTD has a sort of submission process for hooks that get evaluated). I.E., this is an award for not only creating meritorious content, but also for having the ability to maneuver it onto the main page. Thus, to earn this award you must be intimately involved in both the creation of the content and the process of getting the content onto the main page.
Content does not have to be featured at the time of the nomination and if it loses featured status after the award, the award status is unaffected because this award recognizes the achievement of the main page appearance rather than the featured content itself. You must document that you have made a successful contribution to each section of the main page, not that the content currently is featured.
Read the criteria below for achieving the Golden W Award. If you believe you meet the requirements, you may apply for this award via the "Nominations" section.

- Looks correct to me (assuming this is being added to those already included below). Tony started the list and nominated it, and it ran on the MP. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:46, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Reviewing[edit]
Anybody may help in reviewing the nominations. If you would like to actively participate, you may add this page to your watchlist and follow the reviewing instructions below. Although you can nominate yourself to the list above, you should not be the final arbiter for nominations of your own editorial work or your own nominations.
Golden W Instructions[edit]
- If you review and the award is not applicable, remove the nomination and notify the user via their talk page that the nomination failed; don't forget to explain why and to encourage them to try again later when they feel they've done it right.
- Did the editor make the very first encyclopedic content edit for each article? This partially satisfies the requirements for FA, ITN, DTK, and OTD.
- If the editor did not make the very first encyclopedic content edit for one or more of the above articles:
- In the case of FA, did the editor significantly improve and nominate it? (Look at the FAC discussion and the article history.)
- In the case of FP, did the editor create or significantly improve and nominate it? (Check the WP:FPC discussion and WP:POTD archives on the date in question.)
- In the case of ITN, did the editor substantially update and nominate it?
- In the case of DYK, did the editor expand it fivefold, and was the editor credited with the DYK entry? (Check to see if the editor was involved in the DYK nomination by reviewing his/her user contributions. This can be done as follows: Go to the user contribution history. Click on older. The URL should now contain a YYYYMMDDHHMMSS format time for the newest contribution on that page. Change the date to a proper date to look for the DYK info. Then search for "Did You" or something like that. The author may not have been involved in the nomination, but may have been credited nonetheless so check his/her user talk page the same way if you do not find nomination involvement.
- If you review and the award is applicable, remove the nomination from this page and notify the user at their talk with the following template under a new section titled "Golden W Award": {{subst:User:Noraft/Golden W Award/Message}} which produces:

Congratulations! You have been awarded the Golden W Award for your contributions to each long-time section of the Main Page: a Featured Article at Today's Featured Article; articles listed on In The News, Did You Know and On This Day; and a Featured Picture at Picture of the Day. Your contributions to Wikipedia put you in a class of prolific, highly skilled editors. |
- Finally, add the user to the Golden W Award records.
Platinum W Instructions[edit]
In addition to the Golden W checks above consider:
- Did the editor make the very first encyclopedic content edit for each article? This partially satisfies the requirements for FA, FL, ITN, DTK, TAFI, and OTD.
- If the editor did not make the very first encyclopedic content edit for one or more of the above articles:
- In the case of FL, did the editor significantly improve and nominate it? (Look at the FLC discussion and the article history.)
- In the case of TAFI, did the editor significantly improve and nominate it? (Look at the editorial history during the TAFI and check the TAFI nomination page history.)
- If you review and the award is applicable, remove the nomination from this page and notify the user at their talk with the following template under a new section titled "Platinum W Award": {{subst:User:Noraft/Platinum W Award/Message}} which produces:

Congratulations! Your contributions to Wikipedia put you in a class of prolific, highly skilled editors. |

Nomination records[edit]
Users listed here have been awarded one or more Golden W Awards. |
2010[edit]
May 2, 2010 TonyTheTiger (talk · contribs) Gold[edit]
- FA: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Inauguration of Barack Obama/archive4
- ITN: Inauguration of Barack Obama [1]
- DYK: Wikipedia:Recent additions/2008/December [2]
- OTD: Chicago Board of Trade Building [3]
- FP: Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/20070616 Chris Young visits Wrigley (4).JPG
- N.B.: The above nomination is actually a faulty nomination. The award honors appearances on the main page. At that time, User:TonyTheTiger had already achieved 8 WP:TFAs, but First inauguration of Barack Obama would not make the main page until January 20, 2013. Tony was the nominator of three of the eight. The eight were, alphabetically, Campbell's Soup Cans (May 10, 2007, nom/FAC), Chicago Board of Trade Building (June 18, 2008 —/FAC), Cloud Gate (February 9, 2010 —/FAC), Jay Pritzker Pavilion (April 3, 2010 —/FAC), Prairie Avenue (December 27, 2009 nom/FAC), Richard Cordray (January 2, 2009 —/FAC), Saxbe fix (March 6, 2009 —/FAC), and Tyrone Wheatley (October 4, 2008, nom/FAC).
- N.B.: The above nomination is doubly faulty for a malformed ITN nomination, which was misplaced at P:CE. I believe my ruling today on a nomination like this by another would be that the malformed edit qualifies as editorial initiative of starting the nomination although it got moved. When this Award process begins to get more traffic, we can revisit this nomination.
- N.B.: Swapping in earliest DYK nom and archive for use in table that will probably be used as the display once other editors are recognized.
