Raytheon and KONGSBERG, with support from the Norwegian MoD and Armed Forces, completed a successful first flight test for the new AMRAAM-Extended Range missile variant from NASAMS. “Integrating this new technology into the AMRAAM-ER ensures the advanced capabilities of the surface-launched munition for many years to come,” said Paul Ferraro, president of Air and Space Defense Systems at Raytheon. “Agile software upgrades will continue to advance AMRAAM to stay ahead of evolving threats.” Read more: https://rtxcorp.co/42Wwnoq

Today, it's operated by a thumb stick, but tomorrow, the robotic welders will operate on their own. Invented inside the RTX Technology Research Center the process will help factories produce aircraft parts quickly with thermoplastic composites – light, durable and recyclable synthetic materials that can be melted and solidified multiple times without degradation. “This robotic automation will enable a solution to rapidly manufacture materials to provide high quality, lightweight parts for the aircraft industry,” advanced polymers and composites engineer Wenping Zhao said. It’s Engineers Week! We asked our engineers: Why did you choose engineering as a career path? The common theme among their responses is how their families and the power of creativity in experiential learning at a young age through #STEM inspired their path forward. Here are a few of the responses:   #EWeek2024

Magic, or just science? 🔮 Diamond is an excellent conductor of heat. And Ralph Korenstein, an engineering fellow at Raytheon, knows just how to show it. Watch below as he holds a disc-shaped diamond that draws heat from his fingers and uses it to melt an ice cube. It's not just a neat trick – it's an illustration of why Raytheon engineers use lab-grown diamonds to dissipate heat in the electronics of radars and other systems, enabling them to increase their power and sensing capabilities. When Dr. Wayne K. Richards, Jr. was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, his senior enlisted manager gave him a job no one wanted. He stepped into a supply trailer packed with 1,000 mis-labeled airplane parts and began to sort. “I had no idea what I was doing, and I just figured it out,” said Richards, now a senior manager in radar program management at Raytheon, an RTX business. “He started noticing that not only did I do the dirty work and clean everything up, but it was done to perfection.” That project led to another, and another, and soon his manager was his mentor. Today he mentors others – and also runs Rise Build Achieve, a youth empowerment non-profit organization he founded in 2018. “When you sow good deeds, you get positive returns,” said Richards, who is raising two sons. “I believe my kids are going to need someone like that. I’m into establishing a legacy. They see me do it and they will take it on.” Richards is among 11 RTX employees being recognized at the 2024 Black Engineer of the Year conference. His story is an example of the value of mentorship – something RTX promotes in its efforts to strengthen its culture of inclusion, build a broad talent base and develop a future generation of leaders. “Without that mentorship and people taking the time to help me develop, I wouldn’t be where I am,” he said. “Sometimes we think we don’t fit in but he taught me to be myself. Being an authentic person – that’s what people follow from a leadership perspective.” Congratulations to RTX employees Dr. Wayne K. Richards, Jr., Duran Gunter and all the award winners at this week’s 2024 BEYA conference!
