Human flourishing depends upon the cultivation of wisdom, virtue, and friendship.

About us

At the heart of every person is a desire to know and to be known. We believe a truly human education addresses our deepest longings—to pursue knowledge, to have meaningful friendships, and to grow in wisdom and virtue. Valor Education exists to educate the whole person in authentic communities for a full human life. Through our classical charter schools and the Valor Institute, we build communities dedicated to wisdom, virtue, and friendship. Valor Classical Charter Schools Valor operates a network of the highest quality K-12 tuition-free classical charter schools. Our distinctive program offers students a full human education rooted in the classical liberal arts tradition, from the Great Books to fine arts to advanced math and science. In 2022-2023, Valor serves over 2,200 students in central Texas. Through Socratic teaching and a school culture filled with joy, respect, and deep engagement, our classical schools are forming students in wisdom and virtue so they can become fully alive and truly free. The Valor Institute Every civilization has its own unique challenges. The Valor Institute is a creative response to the challenges of our time: the degradation of civic discourse, a reductionist view of the natural world, and the fraying bonds of friendship and community. Through our centers in Austin and San Diego, the Institute offers a rich and personal counter-proposal to these challenges. Each of our initiatives is designed to cultivate wisdom, inspire gratitude, and deepen friendship.

Valor’s Winter Symposium was a full day of true leisure and insightful conversation enjoyed as a community of friends. Valor faculty, staff, and leaders, along with our special guests, met together for shared meals, rich seminar discussions, inspiring remarks, and a festive social. Mr. Peter Crawford gave the keynote address, "Pathmarks to Freedom: Recasting the Drama of Education." We also discussed Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning and Robert Spaemann's "Education as an Introduction to Reality." It was a lovely day and a beautiful reminder of the importance of education.

Last Friday, Valor Education hosted the annual Fall Symposium for leaders, faculty, and friends of Valor such as Christopher Haley of the Hildebrand Project. Centered on the topic of tradition, this special day marked a key moment for us to reflect anew on the nature and meaning of this word. Hearing from Valor Leaders Joel VanDerworp, President and CEO Dave Williams, Headmaster Conor D Hill, and our keynote speaker, faculty and friends of Valor enjoyed a day of contemplative leisure - time dedicated to think about the highest things and ponder their relevance to our lives. Our Keynote speaker, poet, and critic in our day, Dr. James Matthew Wilson, spoke eloquently on tradition, gratitude, and poetry, drawing us ever deeper into a sense of hope from our past and gratitude into our present moment. Further, in preparing readings on T.S. Eliot and Josef Pieper, we participated in seminars to discuss how the past is interwoven into the present through tradition within the arts and broader culture. Our day concluded with a Symposium Social to carry on conversations and deepen friendship over food and good cheer. We are so grateful for the Fall Symposium to spend cherished time together! We have been entrusted with this great tradition and are compelled to share this life of wisdom through wonder with our students, our faculty, and our friends. In words often attributed to Gustav Mahler, “Tradition is not the worship of ashes but the preservation of fire.” At Valor Education, we tend this flame well to honor those who came before us and guide those who will come after us.

The Freshman Tie Ceremony extends the Valor Upper School tradition of wearing ties to our ninth-grade class. The tie symbolizes an elevated demeanor and unites our students in pride and distinction. Last week our Valor North Austin students were able to participate in this special tradition.
