Kelsey, an inpatient float pool nurse at Aurora Medical Center – Grafton, knows first-hand the feeling of facing a serious medical diagnosis. In 2020, she was diagnosed with a chronic voice condition. It impacted her ability to speak and communicate with her patients. “Through this ongoing challenge, I have persevered through some of the lowest times of my life,” she explains. “Thanks to my support system, I’m proud to have stayed the course and hope to be an example for others to push through the tough times and never give up.” Kelsey’s own determination exemplifies her nursing style. Every day, she displays innovation, a commitment to clinical excellence, and leadership. “I’ve been a nurse for 22 years and have had the pleasure of caring for amazingly kind patients. I’ve also cared for patients who weren’t so nice. But no matter what, I’ve learned that everyone is dealing with something and that we must treat every patient with kindness and compassion. It goes a long way.” Nikita, a nurse supervisor at Aurora West Allis Medical Center, recalls losing her father from lung cancer and connects the experience back to her career. “I think about that time when I was ‘the family’ and not the nurse, and I try to give the same incredible care to my patients that was given to my father and our family.”
The team at Advocate Christ Medical Center recently celebrated various milestones in both heart and lung care. The 600th Watchman procedure was performed, along with the 350th Ion robotic bronchoscopy. Each are minimally invasive procedures that contribute to the innovative care that goes on every day at Advocate Christ Medical Center. The Watchman is a procedure for patients with atrial fibrillation. The Ion procedure allows clinicians to identify hard to reach nodules in the lung. Congratulations on achieving these milestones!
Jodie’s nursing career is defined by her thirst for knowledge and growth. She recently completed a transformative year after assuming a completely new role as an interventional radiology nurse at Aurora St. Luke’s South Shore. The former emergency department (ED) nurse is now a highly specialized nurse, assisting physicians in minimally invasive, image-guided surgical procedures. Jodie traveled to sites in both Wisconsin and Illinois to learn, train and grow into her new position, quickly developing the skills and knowledge by shadowing and learning at multiple sites. Her intent was to learn from the best and bring back evidence-based practices and procedures. Jodie was one of our 2022 Nurse of the Year Award honorees.
