Find out more about why we love these baby sleeping bags below.

What is a baby sleeping bag?

Not to be confused with camping gear, a baby sleeping bag is basically a wearable quilt. Baby sleeping bags are designed to be used without extra blankets, come in a variety of sizes and shapes and have different tog ratings for different room temperatures. The big advantage of baby sleeping bags is that once they are on, they are designed to stay on.

Your baby fits snugly inside and, unlike blankets or sheets, a sleeping bag can’t be kicked off. Sleeping bags help to maintain a comfortable, safe sleeping temperature and also prevent your baby's head from being covered or their little body getting uncomfortably tangled up by bedding.

As well as being safer than loose bedding, baby sleeping bags are designed to make night time tasks that little bit easier. All the sleeping bags on our list have double or cleverly designed zippers that help make night time nappy changes less disruptive. Another advantage of a baby sleeping bag is that it stays on if you need to lift your baby to feed or move them to another room.

What tog sleeping bag does my baby need?

Tog stands for 'thermal overall grade' and it’s designed to help you choose the right sleeping bag thickness for the room temperature. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the sleeping bag. You’ll probably need at least two different togs of sleeping bag to ensure your baby is comfortable all year round.

  • 0.5 tog - This tog is for hot weather when your baby needs just the thinnest of cover-ups. Designed to be used in room temperatures of 25 degrees celsius or above.
  • 1-1.5 tog - Sleeping bags at this tog feel more like a thick sheet than a duvet. They’re perfect for warm summer nights when the bedroom is around 20-24 degrees celsius.
  • 2.5 tog - If you’re buying just one sleeping bag this is your best option. 2.5 tog sleeping bags are designed to be used in a room temperature range of about 15-20 degrees celsius, making them suitable for most of the year.
  • 3.5 tog - This tog is designed for very cold climates, so it’s unlikely you’ll need a sleeping bag this thick. Designed to be used in room temperatures of 14 degrees Celsius or under.

While they can’t guarantee a good night's sleep, a quality baby sleeping bag can certainly help. Making sure your little one is comfy and cosy will help them sleep and knowing they are safely snuggled up can ease stress and help you sleep. But which ones are the best? We checked out the latest research, online reviews and asked the BabyCentre Community for their thoughts.
