  • The Hwy 212 Bayou Derriseaux Structures project involved the replacement of two bridges - a main structure and relief structure - over Bayou Derriseaux on Highway 212 in Cleveland County, Arkansas. The goal was to improve hydraulic capacity, comply with Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) standards and remove load limits. The new integral bridges, measuring 143 feet by 33 feet and 241 feet by 33 feet, feature two 11-foot-wide paved travel lanes with 4-foot-wide shoulders. One of the key advantages of these integral bridges is their durability. By eliminating expansion joints and ensuring structural continuity, they require less maintenance and offer superior performance in terms of structural integrity, seismic resistance, and ride quality. Michael Baker International played a crucial role in this project, providing roadway and bridge design plans, hydraulic and geotechnical studies. The project also involved acquiring additional right of way and temporary construction easements. • Colleagues from Michael Baker International’s Santa Ana, California, office recently volunteered their time to support Engineers Week (E-Week) activities hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Los Angeles Younger Member Forum (LA YMF). Our sponsorship of the eleventh annual E-Week events brought STEM outreach to students across Los Angeles. During E-Week, students from elementary to high school engaged in hands-on activities like building structures, designing aluminum foil boats and engineering lab tours and heard from inspiring speakers with STEM backgrounds. At Michael Baker, we are proud to support initiatives like E-Week that promote STEM education and encourage young minds to pursue careers in engineering. #EngineersWeek #STEMEducation #InspiringEngineers #STEMOutreach #Communityservice

  • Two Michael Baker International projects, Corridor H National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Fairmont Central Business District (CBD) Signal Renovation, have received first-place 2023 Engineering Excellence Awards from the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH). Our Charleston office's Environmental team was recognized for their outstanding NEPA work on the high-priority sections of Appalachian Development Highway Corridor H, a new four-lane highway spanning over 100 miles through environmentally sensitive areas. In 2023, our team supported WVDOH to receive environmental clearance for the two remaining sections of the highway that have yet to move to construction.  For the Fairmont CBD Signal Renovation project, Michael Baker provided services for design, study and preparation of plans to renovate or replace 28 signalized intersections in the CBD of Fairmont, West Virginia. Congratulations to the project teams for their well-deserved recognition!

  • Michael Baker International’s work on the Route 3 Bridge Over Northern Secondary and Ramp A project in Hudson County, New Jersey, was honored with the Project of the Year Award from the Professional Engineers Society of Mercer County (PESMC), a chapter of the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers. Michael Baker provided preliminary engineering, final design and post-design services for the project, which replaced the existing four-span bridge, which was structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, with a single-span bridge to eliminate substructure elements within the railroads’ right-of-way. It also included improvements of geometric deficiencies on the approach roadways located in the Township of North Bergen, Hudson County. Congratulations to the team! #engineering #award #PESMC

  • We extend a warm welcome home to our team of nine colleagues who are returning from a two-week bridge build in Rwanda, Africa, in partnership with Bridges to Prosperity (B2P). Throughout the build, the team, in partnership with local community members and B2P staff, accomplished every aspect of bridge superstructure construction, from prepping the job site to setting the main cables to installing the decking and fencing. The final result is a 157-foot-long suspended trail bridge over the Mukebera River. Now, more than 4,300 members of the surrounding communities have safe and reliable access to vital resources, including markets, schools and health centers. Congratulations to the team for a job well done and thank you for Making a Difference! #b2p #bridge #bridgestoprosperity #communityservice

  • Michael Baker International’s work on the Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project Contract 2 in The Bronx, New York, was recently honored with the 2023 Large Project of the Year Award from the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) New York Metro Section. Michael Baker served as the Roadway Designer for the project and provided roadway and staging design services including geometry, grading and modeling for approximately 1.5 miles of the elevated Bruckner Expressway and Bruckner Boulevard, as well as two new interchange ramps under an accelerated design-build schedule. The completed project enhanced efficiency of the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. The estimated 20,000 vans, box trucks and 18-wheelers that move in and out of the markets each day were previously required to traverse the network of surface streets in residential neighborhoods to get to their final destinations. The Hunts Point Food Distribution Center generates approximately $5 billion in annual economic activity and processes approximately 60 percent of the New York City metropolitan area’s produce, fish and meat. Congratulations to the team!
