Story Telling At Its Best

Cutting For Stone remains on my all time favorites list, so I grabbed this as soon as I saw it was available. What a beautifully crafted masterpiece. A wonderfully written saga, following a family thru 3 generations, with characters so well drawn, so fully fleshed out that they leap from the page and break your heart as they suffer human frailties. Generational trauma taking its toll even before birth. Every family have secrets, but not all secrets are meant to deceive...

Perfect narration as well, right down to the accents and characters voices. A triumph for anyone, let alone the author himself.

Do not be daunted by its length. I didn't want it to end, and its so worth your listening hours. And now it sits in my To Be Re-read pile as well as on my all time favorites list.

A thorough and heartfelt journey

The author, once again takes us on a verbal journey through different times and places while giving the reader the experience of being right next to the family or individual who’s life and situation is unfolding. This is a very interesting and informative novel that I highly recommend to everyone, and I do mean everyone because it will show you people, places, and life situations that you have never imagined and I assure you that you will think back on parts of this book for years to come. Please don’t let the length be a deterrent to take on this story because after you finish it you’ll realize that everything in the book was necessary and meant to be part of the story. I only wish I could thank Mr Verghese in person.

Review

Initially I thought that this was going to be a very good listen. It became tedious and boring. I continued to listen hoping that the story would improve. I stopped listening about 1/2 way through.

A great story, well told.

Authors shouldn’t narrate their own books unless it’s Abraham Verghese. His stories simply require his voice- and what a story this is.

Give me a sweeping, multi-generational with unfamiliar cultural elements, all day long.

And way he pronounces the word children is so endearing.

CAPTIVATING!

What an engrossing intergenerational saga! The storytelling is stellar with intricate details of each era. I was so invested in this family and all the minor characters that I cried twice. This tale of forgiveness, secrets, and mystery illness kept me on my toes. There are also many quotes and nods to classic literature woven throughout. The book is well written and the narration is superb. This is my favorite book this year.

long, but a satisfying extended metaphor

Yes, it's long. I know. But this is true literary fiction, not just a compelling story but rich, complex, challenging language. The water extended metaphor is new and fresh, true; I especially liked the comparison of the blood vessels of the brain to rivers on their way to the ocean. So why didn't I give it 5 stars overall? It's just too long. By 2/3 of the way through, I had to decide if I truly cared about these characters. The ending, the denoument, did tie everything up as the 2 story lines finally merged. As for the performance, Verghese has a startling gift with accents (but the American revival preacher passage was pretty dreadful). So I do recommend it if you love literary fiction. If you're looking for a quick, multi-generational story about an Indian family, skip it.

No one but A. Verghese…

Masterful! Verghese brings explanation and dignity to a caste and raj system; brings understanding (however limited from this reader) of complex medical conditions, surgeries and treatments; and brings a tapestry of unique characters woven in another masterpiece of ancient India brought into modern times! I’m left breathless at this breathtaking novel!

Breathtaking!

Breathtaking, brilliant, heartbreaking. Perfect. As intricately constructed and executed as the most fabulous and skilful tapestry. Stunning. Not since A S Byatt’s “Possession” have I been in so much awe not just of the brilliance of the story but the brilliance of the mind that created it. If there were more stars to award this book it would require the Milky Way to do it justice.

Great tale and saga but …

The Audible version was very good but the author narration especially portraying English, Scottish accents was awful . Sometimes I couldn’t understand what he was saying !! Also the Indian words I didn’t know where not interpreted

Powerful and yet gentle

An incredible story with beautiful and interesting characters. A plot which never stands still while at the same time honouring the intricate details, different places and complicated characters. The attention to minor little details opens the world that has been presented to the reader leaving him with a rich experience he can almost taste and smell.

Beautifully told tale of family journeys

I absolutely loved reading a hard copy of Cutting for Stone many years ago, so was delighted to see a new Verghese book available on Audible. Set mostly in India, it follows a family over several generations and connects them to a doctor from England. Verghese is himself a doctor and I found all the medical details fascinating, particularly as my own mother had an acoustic neuroma. The setting, initially in colonial India and later after independence, was also an interesting angle.

I found it a bit confusing initially, but that may have been due to me not sitting down and listening for a concentrated period, as well as there being many characters, all with names unfamiliar to me. I almost felt I needed to have a written list of names to which to refer. But once I got into the story and felt it was going somewhere, I was hooked. Verghese describes Indian life and customs so beautifully and I found myself doing extra chores around the house just to listen to another chapter. I did not realise, until the acknowledgements at the end, that this novel is based on his own family, that one of the central characters is his mother.

Verghese's narration is so-so. I usually really enjoy an author reading his/her own work, as there is an increased passion and understanding of the text, but I would say his reading is not up to the standard of his writing. Several words were mispronounced (he obviously understands their correct use, but not how to say them, and these were not just American options) and I thought he had only one voice and inflection for all the women.

So his narration and the slightly slow start lost this book a star, but otherwise I highly recommend spending a credit on this great listen.

What an Epic saga!!

The Author took 14 years to write this book. I watched his interview on Oprahs Super soul Sunday! I was in! The detail in this book is incredible and I was absolutely hooked from the start, this is a long read but at no point did I want it to stop! Fantastic enthralling story. Probably the best book I’ve ever read! If you can get use to the accent and you will laugh a few times at his Scottish accent, this book will take you on a voyage of your imagination.
It’s a lot of hours, but I was committed from the start. If you like books like The Kite runner, you’ll love this!

Plea for Cutting For Stone!

Please please consider adding Cutting For Stone to Audible. My aging eyesight prevents me from reading this again. It is the best book I have ever read and stays with you long after you finish, no matter how many times you read it. It would be a luxury to be able to listen to this.
Thoroughly enjoying and engrossed in The Covenant of Water and will listen again and again!

Marvellous South India tail.

This is a wonderful narrative tale about South India. I would recommend it to lovers of historical fiction. You are drawn to a time in a place where seasons come and go.

The book is well researched and in many places factually accurate. it’s a nice audible book because the author reads it as well. He has a warm tone to his narration.

Torture to my ears

The story is absolutely superb but the author absolutely massacred the Glaswegian accents. His attempts at the various Glaswegian characters’ accents are so awful that I’ve had to stop listening to the audio book.
I am Glaswegian so I know exactly how these characters should sound. It is so bad and offensive that I can’t easily understand the dialogue and simply cannot listen to it anymore. His Geordie accent is also utterly dreadful and inaccurate. I don’t know Indian accents well enough to know if those attempts are equally appalling. Even in his normal accent he does not pronounce several words correctly, eg he pronounced quay as ‘kway’ when it is pronounced ‘key’. How on earth does a doctor and author not know how to pronounce common words?
