Finding alternatives to gas taxes to fund transportation and the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) are among pressing issues facing transportation today. As more people switch to EVs and buy less fuel, available tax revenue to fund critical infrastructure is declining. And the transition to EVs faces its own challenges as these high tech vehicles require new or upgraded facilities and a specially-trained workforce. In season 6 episode 39 of Transit Unplugged, #WSPUSA's David S. Kim speaks with Paul Comfort about alternatives to the gas tax, including some of the pilots and concepts being tested to move to a "pay-as-you-drive" model for funding, and implications for transportation agencies in the transition to EVs. As we reflect on National Intern Day, we realize how much a key part of an intern’s education is seeing how our work impacts and transforms communities. Our WSP interns were welcomed at the project site for Century City Center, planned to be a 37-story commercial building. WSP has been assisting with the geotechnical and geological design and inspection for the project, made challenging by multiple unusual geotechnical and geological conditions. Site visits like this allow our interns to gain valuable perspective as they see the direct community impacts of our work. At WSP, we believe that community starts with people, place and purpose. Our passion is realizing all that can be built on that foundation: https://lnkd.in/egcecHDT Site visit participants: Anmol Kaur, Vanessa Rebentisch, Fiona McCarthy, Vilma Esteves, Ken Hudson, and site host (Century City Center) #CommunityRealized #WSPproject #WSPUSA2023interns #WSPUSANationalInternDay

With the influx of electric vehicles, increase in vehicle fuel economy and declining purchasing power of the gas tax in the U.S., states are exploring innovative methods to fund transportation infrastructure. One of these methods, road usage charging (RUC), provides a fairer and future-focused solution. In episode #441 of Streetsblog’s Talking Headways podcast, #WSPUSA’s Michael Warren talks with Jeff Wood about how the discussion about RUC has changed over the last decade, the idea of treating roads as a utility by paying for driving by the mile and policy considerations for RUC, including reducing driving and congestion, privacy considerations and replacing existing use taxes. Listen to the podcast: https://lnkd.in/epVBJCdE WSP supports the policy, planning and implementation of RUC applications nationwide. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/exu7PyDE #wspRUC #transportation
