  • “I passed!!” — Whitni F. Toson, MA, LPC-S, PMH-C (@whitnitoson) “Side Note: I never had the desire to test for this certification...I don't like testing or the anxiety that comes along with it. However, it occurred to me how much diversity and representation are needed in the world of perinatal mental health.” “So now, I'm officially Perinatal Mental Health CERTIFIED!!!” ✨✨✨✨✨ The Perinatal Mental Health Certification Program creates a structure for professional education and evaluation, and a standardization of training and experience to inform families and payers of perinatal mental health specialists. The certification curriculum requirements build on existing evidence-based perinatal mental health certificate trainings, adding an advanced-training component. PSI has worked with internationally-known Certification company, Pearson VUE, to develop and publish a computer-based certification exam. Pearson VUE has 30 years’ experience providing test delivery and administration services to professional certification organizations. They have more than 250 company-owned testing centers in the US and nearly 20,000 authorized test centers globally. • Whether this is your first or third time breastfeeding/body feeding, this time can come with several questions. Crystal Wilson, LCSW, CLC, RYT, Doula @birthstory.therapist shared tips on decreasing engorgement and shared signs of whether your baby is getting enough milk. Feeling fullness in your breast is normal; however, engorgement is not. Engorgement is a significant increase in breast size that can cause tightness, swelling, or pain. One way to decrease the chances of experiencing engorgement is by frequently removing milk from the breast by the baby nursing, pumping, or hand expression. Other tips include alternating breasts during feeds, wearing less constricting clothing (including bras), and ensuring your baby has a proper latch. Are you wondering whether your baby is getting enough milk? A few indicators are if your baby is steadily gaining weight, your breasts feel less full after feeds, your nipples look the same after feeds, you can hear your baby suckle in a rapid but rhythmic succession, watching your baby swallow, and seeing that your baby is satisfied after feeds. In addition, diapers can be a good indication of whether your baby is getting enough milk. The number of diapers is typically equivalent to the number of days of the newborn. For example, a 3-day-old typically has at least three wet and three dirty diapers. We Outside! Celebrating Connection and our Community. Join us as we celebrate breastfeeding/body feeding in the Black community during Black Breastfeeding Week. Breastfeeding takes support and community. Share your tips in the comments. #blackbreastfeedingweek #WeOutside #perinatalprovidersofcolor #perinatalmentalhealth#lactationsupport #lactationconsultant #doula Follow ➡️ Perinatal Mental Health Alliance for People of Color

  • “Nine months after having my daughter, I started volunteering for Postpartum Support International (PSI).” — Nancy Goh, MPH, is PSI coordinator for Minneapolis and Baltimore “My postpartum experience opened my eyes to the alarming lack of emotional and mental health resources for new moms. Despite the fact that 1 in every 5 moms suffer from postpartum depression, the majority remain untreated and undiagnosed.” “I wanted to better understand this problem and improve outcomes for new moms. So I joined PSI and began supporting moms in Minneapolis and Baltimore.” “This experience has fueled my passion to build a better world for moms by advocating for increased access to mental health support.” “While I didn’t personally suffer from postpartum depression, I experienced increased levels of anxiety and overwhelm. Accessing two types of mental health support helped me navigate the early challenges of motherhood.” Read full blog article ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eq-R_mPc
