One mans SUP Journey

One of the best ways to improve is our instructor led SUP clinics. These have the added benefit of being a great way to meet like minded people and learn with others.
At this level the best clinic is the Improvers Club and Ladies SUP Club.  This these clinics aim to go on the sea.
FREE to club members.

You can hire SUPing  equipment from us on an hourly basis on Hove Lagoon any time we are open.
Some people knock the Lagoon for anything but beginner SUPing but there is no place better to practice your paddle technique. Time spent mastering these skills on the Lagoon is time well spent. Don’t be afraid to return to the Lagoon every now then. It is god for your technique.
We would advise practicing the skills listed in the “Self Learning” section before thinking about going on the sea unless you are part of a supervised session.
When you are ready for the sea too hire from us you will need to purchase a 5 hours pass or become a member of the club.

Further training is one of the best ways to improve. Club Members get 45% – 75% discount on these courses.

Surf

Our tip here is that a lot of the background techniques can be mastered without waves so when you do get into waves you are able to make the most of them.  You don’t need waves to practice a J Stoke, fast turns to paddling in a straight line. When you get into waves having those skills and others in your repertoire will be a massive advantage.

Things to learn
Catching a Wave
Basic SUP Surfing manoeuvres
Bracing Technique
J Stroke
SUP Front Side Bottom Turn
SUP Front Side Top Turn
Backside Bottom Turn
Backside Top Turn

At this level the best clinic is  any of the clinics when there are some waves.

SUP Surfing is all about timing. You need waves and not too much wind. Ideal conditions are some onshore wind followed by the wind turning northerly or dropping off.
You can only SUP surf in Hope about 2,5 hours after high tide. low tide is best.
You can prepare your self for SUP surfing by improving your paddling techniques (See Touring Section) and doing some home work on the  “Self Learning”section here.
When you are ready for the sea to hire from us you will need to purchase a 5 hours pass or become a member of the club.  as you grow in confidence you may want to hire when we do not have safety cover. This can be arranged by completing our “Unsupervised hire form” from the office.
