Caner created a logo for this project. The triangle came from the location of three countries and colors has meanings too. Turquoise is the historical and cultural color of Turkey, red one came from Japan flag and golden one came from Malaysia flag. In addition, interlocking triangles represent diversity.

Q1. How did you contribute to Wikimedia projects in October 2023?

Eugene Ormandy: I did a lot of things in October 2023. I held four editathons, created four Wikipedia articles, contributed to other Wikimedia projects, and wrote eithteen Diff articles in Japanese and English! Of these, the four editathons were particularly impressive.

1. Wiktionary Editathon 2023 with Malaysian and Indonesian friends was a good opportunity to learn about other languages and Wiktionary.
2. A small editathon with Takenari Higuchi for Wikimedia Japan-Türkiye Friendship was a lot of fun. I love talking to Wikimedians while editing.
3. An online editathon week for Wikimedia Japan-Malaysia Friendship was significant because some Wikimedia projects – not just Wikipedia – were improved in the online campaign. This is rare in the Japanese community.
4. An editathon called WikipediaOYA at Oya Soichi Library in Tokyo, one of my favourite libraries, achieved great results. Many high-quality Wikipedia articles were created, and the participants analysed the uniqueness of the library by editing Wikipedia.

Caner: October was a very exciting month for me. I would like to talk about the Turkic Wikimedia Conference, which is our biggest work in October. More than 30 presentations were made in 3 languages at the conference, which hosted more than 90 participants from 10 countries. The excitement of hosting the participants in Istanbul and the motivation and pleasure of completing the conference positively is indescribable. We also celebrated Wikidata’s 11th anniversary with a cake!

Taufik Rosman: October was quite eventful for the user group. After months of preparation, we did an outreach in an aboriginal village in Kelantan, Malaysia where we attempted to preserve the indigenous Mendriq language which according to experts will gone extinct in the next 20 years. The 2-day outreach consisted of training local villagers to edit in Wiktionary, Incubator Wikimedia, Commons Wikimedia and Lingua Libre. A detailed post will be published soon.

Q2. What was the most impressive news of Wikimedia Movement in October 2023?

Eugene Ormandy: OtuNwachinemere‘s Diff article “Climax of Wiki Loves Africa ’23 – Celebrating Climate and Weather winning media” was really impressive. I think it is important to document the climate change through Wikimedia projects.

Caner: Frankly, the Diff article that impressed (excited) me was the Wikimedia Japan-Turkey Friendship Editathon in Japan 13 October 2023. Because this event, which was the first physical outcome of the Japanese-Turkish friendship project we carried out jointly with Eugene, gave me information and motivation about the Japan Wikimarathon that we will hold in Türkiye.

Taufik: There was this one diff that piqued my interest. It was a diff titled “The Internet Outages Guide” by Nada Hatem. I shared the article with my friend. Even though it is unlikely for this to happen in Malaysia, however, some of the tips are quite useful for those who does not have an Internet connection to begin with like in some remote places in Malaysia. Do give it a read!

Q3. What did you learn about your friends’ communities in October 2023?

Eugene Ormandy: I enjoyed reading Wikipedia articles about Malaysia in English, which refer to [[Category:Bilateral relations of Malaysia]]. Not only did I read them, I also translated one of them, [[Egypt-Malaysia relations]], into Japanese [[エジプトとマレーシアの関係]].

I also enjoyed reading some books about Turkey.

Caner: During the Turkic Wikimedia Conference 2023 Istanbul, I listened to the events for young people organized by our participants from Uzbekistan in their own countries. I realized that, in addition to all of them being brand projects, they were very motivating and productive for young people. I think we should hold similar events in Türkiye.

Taufik: I learnt that Türkiye was celebrating its 100th anniversary as a republic. The country achieved a lot in that span of time. I watched the celebration and it was really festive. It made me wonder how would Malaysia celebrate its 100th birthday in the next few decades.

Playlist

As Caner had suggested in the September report, we made a music playlist! We are happy if this playlist help readers to have interested in our culture!

Eugene Ormandy: I picked up three songs. The first is “TECHNOPOLIS” by Yellow Magic Orchestra, one of the pioneer of Techno Pop. The second is “管弦楽のためのラプソディ (Rhapsody for Orchestra)” by Yuzo Toyama. I think this is one of the successful examples of the fusion of traditional Japanese music and European “classical music.” The third is “アイドル (Idle)” by YOASOBI, the most popular song in Japan in 2023.

Caner: October is a slightly stagnant and sad month in which we feel autumn deeply. For this reason, I would like to leave here a few songs that are suitable for this month and that I love very much. I will share the songs with you in three different languages: Korean, Turkish and Kazakh. Even though the languages are different, the emotions they convey are always the same!

Taufik: There was this one song that I listened. It was a Japanese song titled “Habit” by SEKAI NO OWARI. Even though it was released last year, there was a singer that made a cover of the song recently named Kogeinu and the singer has not been active. It was quite catchy and I was interested on how the singer ends some of the words with a consonant which is not that common in Japanese.

Impact Module

At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [1]

Add a Link

We released “add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [2] [3]

We have a few Wikipedias remaining:

• German and English Wikipedia will be contacted at the beginning of January 2024.
• There are a few small wikis that will not receive the task until they have enough articles for the algorithm to work properly.

Community Configuration

• We shared Community Configuration 2.0 plans with technical stakeholders. [4] 🖂
• Initial Community Configuration design ideas have been shared and discussed with community members.
• A basic Community Configuration 2.0 demo is released on ToolForge.
• Developers can find some initial proof of concept code shared on gitlab.

Mentorship

When a mentor marked themselves as “Away”, they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [5]

We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [6]

We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [7]

It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [8]

Hello, everyone! I’m Amal Ramadan, a Senior Community Relations Specialist at the Wikimedia Foundation. I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the Wiki Women Camp in Delhi, India, from 19-22 October, with the theme of “Map Up, Rise Up.”

I had the privilege of sharing the power of Wikipedia’s mobile applications to empower women globally.

The camp was a remarkable experience, bringing together women from diverse backgrounds and regions, all united by a common goal: to amplify their voices and make a meaningful impact on the world. These women, despite their numerous responsibilities, have chosen to dedicate their time to creating positive change.

The primary focus was to bridge the gender gap, and this was clear through the type of sessions and presentations that were presented during the camp, including:
A gender sensitivity workshop, Community Story, Collaborations and Partnerships Workshop, and Engagement Plan Commitment.
I had the honor of presenting Wikipedia’s mobile applications as a valuable tool for our female readers, editors, and community members; you can check my full presentation from this link on Commons. The Wikipedia apps provide a way for women to be a part of sharing human knowledge. They can edit articles, have patroller rights, and make suggested edits—all while on the move.

Specifically, the suggested edits feature on the Android version of the app offers a various set of opportunities for women editors and contributors:

• Article Description: A way to provide concise and informative summaries for articles, helping readers get the subject at a glance. This ensures that information is presented in a clear and accessible manner.
• Article Images: Contributors can enhance Wikipedia articles by suggesting relevant images that add visual context and more explanation to the content, enriching the overall user experience.
• Image Captions: By contributing descriptive captions to images, editors play a crucial role in providing readers with a better understanding of the meaning and context behind visual elements within articles.
• Image Tags: The suggested edits feature allows custom tags to be added to the images, making it easier for users to search and discover relevant visual content on Wikipedia.
  

It’s important to note that while these suggested edits are currently available for the Android version, they are expected to be made accessible to iOS users and released in the LATAM region in March 2024. The global release is anticipated to follow in June 2024. This expansion ensures that women contributors worldwide can actively participate in shaping and enriching Wikipedia’s content through these valuable editing features.

The Wikimedia apps are designed to seamlessly fit into users’ busy days, considering various responsibilities such as work and family duties. One of our app users even shared that she uses the article images on the Android version as a kind of game during her transportation time or while waiting at the doctor’s clinic.

The cultural exchange was equally enriching. India, with its rich history, served as an inspiring backdrop for the collective efforts of women, both young and old, to effect change in their communities. It was an overwhelming experience to witness this fusion of history and contemporary female empowerment.

One of the highlights of my trip was meeting Sumita Roy. She shared her passion for photography- check her YouTube channel here from this link – and her active involvement in Wikimedia projects like Bangla Wikipedia, English Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. She also participated in Wiki Loves Folklore when it started as Wiki Loves Love in India.

Sumita introduced herself as an amateur photographer, nature lover, and a Wikipedian; that’s why most of her contributions are around photographing nature and uploading them on Commons with this category: Birds near Jamnagar railway station and Category: Quality images as examples. Regardless of the years she has lived, she continues to hunger for knowledge and achievements, serving as an example of determination, and this can be shown in her participation during the workshops that we attended together at the camp.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of this experience, and I am excited about the positive impact that the collective efforts of these amazing women will have on our world. The future is bright, and Wikimedia volunteers remain an essential tool for achieving this transformation through their work, adding and curating content that anyone can access, for free, anywhere on the planet.

In November, the Movement Charter Drafting Committee (MCDC) members engaged in a series of meetings and discussions, continuing on their commitment to shaping the future of the Wikimedia movement. It has been quite an interesting time for the MCDC to experiment with the open monthly drop-in sessions to engage with community members more regularly. You can read more about their work in the text below. Looking ahead, the MCDC is gearing up for the December 7th open session and is set to share high-level responses to community feedback in January 2024. With the effort and engagement of the past few months, the MCDC is in full work mode to pave the way for their in-person meeting in late January dedicated to consolidating the Charter content and preparing for the next phase of community consultations. 

In November, the MCDC met eight times: 

• November 2 – Monthly drop-in session: This monthly session with the community continued discussions from last month on the structure of the Global Council. The supporting team has provided a recap of the conversation on the Movement Charter’s Talk page. For those who missed this session, recording is available on Youtube. Among the participants of the two drop-in sessions, there was a lack of representation from Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and ESEAP regions. Next drop-in session is scheduled for December 7 at 15.00 UTC (check your local time). We invite you to sign-up on Meta.   
• November 3 – Stakeholder meeting: The MCDC met with Selena Deckelmann, Chief Product and Technology Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation, for the second time. The discussion centered around the work that needs to be done to truly pursue Movement Strategy pillars, with a specific focus on Knowledge Equity from a Product and Technology perspective. Some of the topics discussed included volunteer sustainability, particularly providing support to online editors; the importance of clearly defining the scope and expectations from the Tech Council; and exploring the implications for the Movement Charter by adding the lens of content generation.  
• November 9 – MCDC weekly meeting: The Committee members were briefed on preparations for Wikimedia Summit 2024. The Committee has shifted its weekly meeting time to 15:00 UTC due to wintertime changes. Based on the diverse feedback received from July to September 2, 2023, along with insights from the monthly drop-in sessions, various aspects of the Global Council were discussed within the Committee, including financial implications. The Committee is exploring new proposals on the Global Council topic. 
• November 16 – MCDC weekly meeting: Continuing the discussions on the new proposals for the Global Council draft. 
• November 23 – MCDC weekly meeting: The review of the revised Hubs draft was skipped due to not having a quorum of committee members at the live meeting. MCDC members started  preparing for their in-person meeting in January 2023, which aims to produce a preliminary draft of the full Charter, to be consulted on ahead of the Wikimedia Summit.
• November 28 – Stakeholder meeting: The MCDC met with the Senior Leadership of the WMF. 
• November 29 – Stakeholder meeting: The MCDC met with an Affiliations Committee (AffCom) liaison to discuss feedback from the AffCom. 
• November 30 – MCDC weekly meeting: The MCDC discussed proposals on the Global Council draft. 

In other news:

After the MCDC’s in-person feedback sessions at Wikimania in Singapore, the Committee members have been busy in various capacities. Like many other active individuals in our movement, MCDC members wear different hats. In addition to participating in weekly meetings, and drafting work, some members actively presented at regional Wiki conferences from September to November.

• Michał Buczyński presented at the CEE Meeting with support from Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska (Movement Communications team, WMF) in Tbilisi.
• WikiConvention Francophone 2023 in Abidjan was attended by Georges Fodoup and Anass Sedrati.  
• Ciell presented at the German Wikipedia:WikiCon 2023 with the support of Nicole Ebber (WM DE). 
• WikiWomen Camp 2023 in Delhi was attended by Ciell.  
• MC Ambassador Kurmanbek, with the support of Daria, held MC conversations with Wikimedians of Turkic Languages at the Turkic Wikimedia conference in Istanbul. 
• Anass, Georges, Ciell led a panel session at WikiIndaba conference in Agadir with support of WMF staff Yop Rwang Pam and Winnie Kabintie. 
• Risker and Pharos organized MC conversation at WikiConference North America.

What’s next?

• Closing the feedback loop: In December, the MCDC will share a high-level response to the community feedback collected from July-September 2, 2023. Response to the feedback received from September 2 to December 31 will be published in January 2024. The Committee thanks those who have shared feedback, including the Executive Director’s meeting statement published recently on Meta, and the Wikimedia Board of Trustees feedback the committee received via the MCDC liaisons. 
• MCDC in-person meeting: The Committee will gather for three days of working sessions in January 2024. The main aim is to consolidate the content and prepare for the next community consultation of the full Charter ahead of the Wikimedia Summit. 

In 2023, Wiki Loves Earth International photo contest supported the initiative Wiki4HumanRights, in partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Its goal is to raise awareness of nature protection and human impacts on nature.

Within the special nomination “Human Rights and Environment”, we accepted images that capture the impact of human activity on the environment. You can read more about the nomination and criteria for image selection here.

We’ve been organizing this nomination every year since 2021. In 2023 for the first time it accepted images from the whole world, not only from the countries taking part in the main contest.

And as a result, we received over 8,500+ images in the nomination, the highest-ever number.

This year, we had 6 people on the Jury team: biologists, ecologists, human rights and environment experts, and Wikimedians, who helped us to choose the best images.

• Nicky Deluggi (Italy, intern with the Human Rights Team at the Wikimedia Foundation, former climate activist);

• Juliana Almeida (Portugal, UNEP’s Law Division as an Environmental Law specialist);
• Masana Mulaudzi (South Africa, Senior Manager, Campaign Organizing at the Wikimedia Foundation).

After a review by the organizing team and the round of jury evaluation, we have the top 10 best images for the special nomination.

And we are ready to present them!

1st place: For the first place, the jury chose the series of two images that represent the issue of pollution with plastic and waste gathered on Odaw river in Ghana.

One of the jurors, Joao Pompeu, commented on these images: “The bird´s eye view puts into perspective the plastic pollution, one of the greatest environmental challenges of our times. The intriguing composition and the dimension of the people in the scene against waste gathering compel us to think about the fundamental right to a clean environment. Human wellbeing is only achieved in balance with natural processes, and this requires overcoming socioenvironmental inequalities”.

2nd place: One more common environmental problem created by humans is shown in this photo — the consequences of burning dry grass in the “Seretsky” hydrological reserve located in Ukraine.

“Hotter and drier weathers, probably caused by climate change, are shifting the patterns of wildfires worldwide. In consequence, wetlands and hydrological reserves are affected, forcing the population to evacuate or cope with uncontrolled fire. The photo represents a global issue with consequences for human well-being. The contrast of the shape of the fire line with the river and the dry grass makes the photo dramatic and impressive. It seems that the river is also burned” – says Joao Pompeu.

3rd place: Human effects on nature are various. Fishing is one of the ways to impact the ecosystem, often in damaging ways. This image from Serbia shows fishing at sunrise.

“A pleasant, low-key photo of the early morning fog. The mood conveys the enjoyment of being at that place and time” – commented juror Joao Pompeu.

4th place: The photo shows a windmill near the Sivash. Location — Azovo-Syvash National Nature Park, Kherson Oblast, Ukraine.

Nicky Deluggi, one of the jurors, commented on this image: “Breathtaking composition and colors, a surreal merger of natural and artificial landmarks”.

5th place: This beautiful view, taken in Portugal, shows us a combination of human life and nature in Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela.

One of the jurors, Masana Mulaudzi, commented on this image: “This image beautifully balances light and dark to show the impact of people on our Earth”.

6th place: Flooding often disrupts nature and human activity. The image from Italy, taken in Bacini di Conselice shows us the street, which became a river after a huge rain.

7th place: Unfortunately, animals are almost the first who are suffering from human actions. This image perfectly represents how we damage the forest dwellers. Location — Ireland, Phoenix Park.

Joao Pompeu describes the problem in this way: “The photo portrays how environmental pollution threatens biodiversity worldwide. Synthetic fibers from oil and coal are found from European parks to tropical landscapes and polar waters, posing real challenges for biological conservation”.

8th place: The ecosystem of oceans is hugely important for the environment. And catching shellfish also has its effect, which is represented in this photo in the Atlantic ocean. It was taken in Nigeria, Opobo town, Port Harcourt.

9th place: Electricity underpins human activity but also disrupts nature. The photo shows us the fog and the electrical lights covering the city Butwal in Nepal.

“Brilliant – the contrast between the soft clouds and the harsh city lights creates a dreamy yet eery atmosphere” – commented Nicky Deluggi.

10th place: Here is an up-close view of the portion of Taal Volcano’s ash-covered rugged terrain. Since its closure to tourists in 2020, the view from Agoncillo, Batangas offers the closest experience to witnessing the volcano island without physically visiting it.

Readers around the world are familiar with the mainspace side of Wikimedia projects: the verified article pages, the proofread books, the treasure trove of open source media, and countless dictionary definitions, to name a few. There is also a lot happening in the background. Without the work of people resolving conflicts in talk pages, creating bots and giving creative solutions to conflicts the work around content would be much more difficult. Today we are celebrating usuário:Albertoleoncio, a Wikimedian who likes to  work on the backstage of the Portuguese Wikimedia projects: watching and performing  oversight content, working as an interface administrator and being a volunteer for VRT.  

For Alberto, the Wikimedia adventure started twice, and both times in relation to the same place – Itamari, a Brazilian municipality, 913 kilometers from the capital city, Brasília. In 2006 Alberto added some information and a photo to the article about Itamari, where he comes from. And for the next 13 years he was an occasional editor, making small changes from time to time. This changed in 2019 when he came back to editing about Itamari, and specifically, about the highway crossing the municipality. His edit was not perfectly sourced, which was pointed out by another Wikimedian. The discussion this sparked, made Alberto realize that Wikipedia is so much more than an encyclopedia – it is a community. And that made him engage more. 

The community is what Alberto finds the most important in the wikiworld. His favorite picture on Wikimedia Commons shows a group photo from WikiConBrasil 2022: Wikimedia contra a desinformação (Wikimedia against disinformation), this was the first conference held by and for the Brazilian community. The picture shows a vibrant and energetic community, filled with that special energy, which is always created when Wikimedians gather together. Alberto is also in that picture, in one of the back rows. 

The backstage is also where he can be found in the Wikimedia projects. He is less about creating content nowadays, more about creating a supportive infrastructure for others to do so. Alberto manages bots, scripts, filters, templates and modules. He helps beginners to understand Wikipedia rules and policies, and engages in administrative work: protecting pages, and blocking vandals. 

This kind of work is  meaningful in many different ways. It can even help in making Wikipedia a kinder place. Alberto is proud of his work in the Main page “Eventos atuais”, similar to the’ In the news’ on English Wikipedia. Such events would be directly inserted in the page – often without previous discussion – which would generate numerous conflicts among users, account blocks and page protection. Therefore, he proposed a new system in which discussions would be more organized, civilized and with an automated proposal publishing and archiving system. Since then, the conflicts have drastically decreased.

When asked about his work, Alberto says: “I like to think of my work as a ‘bridge builder,’ helping the community and the wiki movement in general reach their objectives. I didn’t join Wikipedia with a specific agenda, such as contributing to articles on a specific topic. I joined it because I identified with the proposal of promoting free knowledge, in a curated and disinformation-free fashion, reaching any interested person, no matter the context.”

If there is anything that Alberto regrets when it comes to Wikimedia, it is the lack of time. Nowadays he tries to focus on the areas where he can make a difference, be it on technical parts, on internal community discussions, or in other movement activities.

Albertoleoncio would like the world to discover the same that he had discovered at the second beginning of his Wikipedia journey – that this encyclopedia is much more than it may seem on the surface. “I wish whoever reads Wikipedia understands that it is not just a website to look for information, That Wikipedia is just one aspect of something much bigger, that there are several editors behind a single article, that there is a community behind each Wikipedia and that it goes much beyond that, with many projects in the wiki movement created by volunteers for free knowledge.” – he says.

From November 18th to 19th, 2023 Wikimedia Indonesia and the Wikimedia Foundation took part in the regional and national level dialogue on “Youth Actions Against Child Marriage and Harmful Practices” hosted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN sexual and reproductive health agency. The event aims to raise awareness among Indonesian youths about sexual and reproductive health and its crucial role in preventing harmful practices such as child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C). Additionally, it seeks to establish a national platform for knowledge exchange and peer-to-peer learning, while also providing capacity building for Indonesian youths to take action, utilizing digital platforms for effective campaigning on these issues. 

On the first day of the conference, Masana Mulaudzi, Senior Manager of Campaigns Organizing at the Wikimedia Foundation, discusses the Wikimedia Movement’s commitment to closing the gender gap in the digital space to nearly 100 people who joined the event in person and virtually. Masana touches on the replication of global gender inequality patterns in the Wikimedia ecosystem as well as the challenges and needs faced by content creators, editors, functionaries, and organizers within the movement. The talk also delves into the systemic issues faced by women, non-binary individuals, and marginalized communities, outlining the strategies and efforts employed to bridge these gaps. Masana’s presentation concludes by highlighting the collective efforts of the Wikimedia community and encouraging ongoing collaboration to promote gender equality and knowledge equity in the digital realm.

“Young people in Indonesia and across the world need safe access to accurate, accessible content on trusted sexual and reproductive health on the internet. To create this information, we rely on the efforts of a diverse group of contributors, including editors. The Wikimedia Movement demonstrates the powerful impact of collective efforts at closing the gender gap – in roughly 10 years, editors who identify as women have increased from under 10% to 22% in 2023 – representing a roughly 100% increase. While organizers who invite new editors into our movement need more support to sustain this growth, partnerships like this one with the UNFPA, can help our movement develop content that responds to the needs of our time.”

Hassan Mohtashami, UNFPA Indonesia Representative, emphasized the centrality of sexual and reproductive health and rights to the gender equality and human rights agenda. He stated, “Without sexual and reproductive health and rights, we will not achieve full gender equality and human rights, hindering our progress in development, peace, and security.”

In Indonesia, where one in nine children are married before the age of 18, and 55% of women aged 14 to 59 report their daughters undergoing female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), the need for action is urgent. Hassan highlighted the pivotal role of digital platforms, with approximately 150 million people accessing digital media at any given time. He stressed the importance of crafting messages that resonate with audiences through these platforms, delivering comprehensive and accurate information to combat child marriage and FGM/C.

On the second day of the conference, Rachmat Wahidi (Wikimedia Indonesia Chair), had the opportunity to interact with 30 Indonesian youths from UNFPA’s youth networks, namely the Community of Practice for SRH Youth Content Creators, BESTARI scholarship recipients (scholarship targeted to Indonesian girls to prevent child marriage), and Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) National Youth Facilitator network through his in-person workshop.

“In this digital era, social media gently ushers in various transformations in people’s lives. Its utility shines as a valuable tool for advocating positive changes in societal norms, changes that may still be unfamiliar to many. Nurturing media and information literacy becomes vital for individuals to eloquently express their thoughts and access accurate information. We warmly extend an invitation to you to join the Wikimedia movement to collaborate harmoniously in creating and enhancing articles centered around women’s topics, for a more informed and inclusive digital world.”

Rachmat shared his insights on utilizing media and information literacy for the digital movement. In his workshop, Rachmat mentions the importance of media and information literacy to filter information, combat misinformation and disinformation, as well as to protect personal information on the internet. He also correlates those aspects with the role of Wikipedia in media and information literacy by introducing Bahasa Indonesia Wikipedia as an example, highlighting the importance of the “talk” page to discuss the accuracy of recent edits on Wikipedia as well as “revision history”. At the end of his presentation, Rachmat highlights the effort of Wikimedia Indonesia to bridge the gender gap by participating in the planned Wiki Women’s Health campaign while sharing the example of the women’s health Wikipedia articles that required improvement as a call to action.

The event has opened up the understanding of how the Wikimedia movement could align with the global effort to bridge the gender gap, particularly on women’s health topics spearheaded by UNFPA. This collaboration shall serve as a milestone for further partnerships with UNFPA in the Asia Pacific region.

OSM in action

• The Find My District feature on the New York City Council website displays a CARTO basemap of New York, which is based on data from OpenStreetMap. Guillaume Rischard has reminded the website’s development team of the need to follow OpenStreetMap’s attribution rules properly.

Licences

• Kathleen Lu, from the OpenStreetMap Foundation Legal/License Working Group, suggested that the EU member governments release their open data under a CC-0 licence rather than CC-BY-4.0, so that it can be used by OpenStreetMap. If this is not possible, they have proposed a slight modification to the CC-BY-4.0 licence to make it compatible with OpenStreetMap’s licence.

Software

• The next version of SMASH (formerly known as Geopaparazzi), yet unreleased, will support GeoJSON layers, and fix the long-standing bug that caused OSM tiles to not be visible at very high zoom levels.

Programming

• rtnf showed how to search for active OSM contributors around an area, including their edit count, and frequently used tags.

Releases

• GDAL 3.8.0 has introduced significant speed-ups in the creation of GeoPackage files (can be 3 to 4 times faster). Instead of delegating the spatial RTree creation to SQLite, as was done before, the GDAL codebase now embeds a specialised algorithm. The developer has proposed the improvements in the algorithm to the SQLite project.
• Christoph Hormann announced the release of OpenStreetMap Carto version 5.8.0.
• The November update of Organic Maps (an OSM-based mobile application) has been released, with an outdoor style preview, fixes in map styles and routing, and updated map data. Organic Maps now also has a referral link to a travel metasearch engine, which some users think conflicts with the privacy-focus mantra of the app. F-Droid has discussed adding an Anti-Features warning for users.

Greetings EduWikimedians! We are excited to introduce the EduWiki Nigeria Community – an eclectic team of certified trainers, volunteers, educators, students, and professionals. Our drive? The traditional Nigerian education, historically based on textbooks, chalkboards, and designated areas for learning, is about to undergo a digital transformation. While national policies prioritize Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and ICT skills, there’s a gap in the recognition of Open Educational Resources (OER). The introduction of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom, in accordance with Nigeria National Policy on Education and UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy Framework, aims to bridge this gap.

Our Mission Includes:

• Empowering teachers with Wikipedia’s vast potential, guiding them to weave it into their curricula.
• Paving avenues for students to enrich Wikipedia, bringing academic perspectives to global readers.
• Building collaborative bridges with community organizations, education authorities, and digital literacy non-profits.

This month, most of our time and efforts went to reviewing intern selections, solving selection conflicts, developing new strategies to manage difficult decisions in a short timeframe, submitting proposals to FOSDEM 2024, and planning activities for the next 4 months. As the majority of my tasks this month were confidential in nature, I’d like to talk about two interconnected aspects of our program: connections and promotion of the program. We had a particularly challenging time defining the amount of interns we could select this cohort due to the expiration of grants.

• Sarah Hoffmann announced the release of Nominatim versions 4.3.2 and 4.2.4. These versions contain fixes for SQL injection security holes in the Nominatim CLI.
• Sarah Hoffmann reported on an experiment to improve the performance of the Nominatim Python frontend by tuning SQLAlchemy. This optimisation successfully improved the performance of the Python frontend, although it is still not as good as the previous PHP implementation.
• In response to the inaccessibility of Bing satellite imagery in some OSM editors, Microsoft’s Milos Brzakovic explained the new rules for using the Bing Maps imagery API for OSM editors. This is due to the new policy of separating the free version of the API for OSM editors from the paid version of the Bing Maps imagery API.

On October 2, 2018, I reached out to the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. My letter highlighted the urgent need for parental guidance and content ratings on TV programs for children. Many shows broadcasted lack age-appropriate warnings, exposing children to inappropriate content like vulgar language, violence, and negative portrayals of family and gender roles. This issue, I argued, required intervention in line with practices in any civilized society.

We are thrilled to share the exciting news that the 2024 Wikimedia Hackathon is scheduled to unfold in the captivating city of Tallinn, Estonia, from May 3rd – 5th 2024!

A Celebration of Innovation and Collaboration

The Wikimedia Hackathon is not just an annual hacking event, it’s a celebration of innovation and collaboration, uniting the global Wikimedia technical community in a dynamic gathering focused on connection, innovation, and exploration. At this event, technical contributors hailing from all corners of the globe converge with a shared mission: to enhance the technological infrastructure and software that underpins and empowers Wikimedia projects.

The theme for this edition aligns with last year’s, emphasizing the gathering of individuals who have a track record of contributing to the technical aspects of Wikimedia projects. ウィキペディアに寄付をくださる皆さんは、さまざまな期待を込めておられることと拝察します。ウィキペディアを運営する非営利団体「ウィキメディア財団」は、お受けした寄付金全額をウィキペディア、ウィキメディアのプロジェクト群、その他の無料の知識の使命に使うことをお約束します。

毎日、ウィキペディアを開く人は大勢いても、ではそのアクセスが絶えないようにするには何が必要か、はっきりとわからないままではないでしょうか。その点を以下に7つ示しますが、いずれも皆さんからウィキペディアにご寄付をいただきたい理由でもあります。ウィキメディア財団という存在と役割をご説明し、皆さんからいただいた寄付金がどれほど重要かお伝えしたいと思います。

1. 非営利活動法人として、ウィキメディア財団は世界の読者や寄付者の皆さんのおかげで独立性を保っています。

ウィキペディアはお金もうけをしない団体が運営していると聞くと、びっくりされる人がたくさんおられます。実際には、グローバルなウェブサイトのアクセス数上位10件で、ウィキペディアだけが非営利組織の運営です。

広告収入で運営しない、購読料や会費を取らないことが重要で、 個人情報を売ってお金を稼ぐこともしません。運営経費の大部分は、ウィキペディアの読者の皆さんがくださる寄付金に支えられています（1口平均$11アメリカドル ）。ウィキペディアのページ上で寄付のお願いのバナーをご覧になり、クリックして手続きしてくださいます。この寄付モデルは私たちの独立性を守ってくれるもので、特定の団体や個人がウィキペディアのあり方や内容を操縦する事態がないように作用します。

3. 読者による寄付は技術を支援し、読者や編集者が知識を共有する場としてウィキペディアを成立させ、読んだり改訂する方法の改善を支えています。

財団の年次予算のおよそ半分はウィキペディアとその姉妹プロジェクト群の維持管理に直接、充当されています。具体的にはウィキペディアの技術面のインフラが月間数億回のアクセスに対応できるようにしますし、システム管理になくてはならない人材の人件費として、サイトの信頼性技術、ソフトウェア技術、セキュリティその他の役割を恒常的に保っています。
ウィキペディアを300超の言語で提供するには、読者も編集者もそれぞれが使いたい言語で読んだり投稿したりできるように、最高水準の多言語技術が求められます。また寄付金の使途として、ウィキペディアにおける利用者体験の改善、さらにボランティア編集者のグローバルなコミュニティの拡張を支えることにより、当サイトの知識を増やし、常に現実に即して正確で、役に立つように保っていけるのです。

4. 変化するテクノロジー環境にいる私たちは進化し続け、新たなニーズに応え、世界的脅威が新たに現れても課題に対応していきます。

ウィキペディアを創設から10年目までの期間に定期的に読んでおられた皆さんなら、きっとエラーメッセージが画面に出るなどの経験を一度はされたことでしょう。技術への着実な投資を重ねてきた現在では、もう、そのような事態は発生しなくなりました。投資の更新により、トラフィックがかつてないほど急増したときですら軽々と処理できますし、閲覧や編集の中断を予防しています。

また新たな課題にも適切に対応し、高度な偽情報戦術や政府による検閲などの脅威、サイバーセキュリティ攻撃、さらにウェブを規制する法案の変更などにも対処しています。セキュリティのプロトコルが更新されたおかげで、当財団のサイト群が攻撃者に悪用される可能性は抑制されますし、無料の知識をめぐる私たちの使命を守るため、当財団法務担当者も力を尽くしています。

現在、トラフィックの過半数をモバイル機器のアクセスが占めるようになりました。音声入力に連動した機器やウェブサイトでは、自社サービスの利用者ニーズに応じようと、ますますウィキペディアを援用する傾向を強めています。そこで私たちは進化の歩みを止めることなく、これらの需要に応じていきます。
編集記：この文章は当初、2022年11月に投稿したため、その後、ウィキメディアのボランティアのコミュニティばかりかウィキメディア財団も人々が知識を求める方法を人工知能がどのように変容させるか、探ってきました。私たちとしては最近、チャットGPT対応のウィキペディア用プラグイン試作版を新たに開発して情報の帰属と引用を適切に提供し、これによりウィキペディア利用者の皆さんが最新情報を検索できるように整えました。

5. 私たちは財政経営に責任を持ち、ウィキペディアの当面の需要と長期的な持続可能性をバランスさせます。

おそらく皆さんも、普通預金と定期積立預金の口座は使い道を分けておられるかと思います。

たぶん片方は日常の出費に当てて、もう片方は緊急事態用、つまり自家用車がいきなり故障したなどのため、あるいはまた退職後の家計などの長期的な経済計画に備えておられるのではないでしょうか。

非営利団体もそのあたりは似ています。私たちには普通預金のような役割を果たす口座が2口あります。また寄付基金口は、経済危機などの緊急事態、資金面の万が一に備えるために設けてあります。

その財団寄付基金口（endowment）は長期にわたる恒久的な資金源という存在です。寄付基金の投資で得た収益を土台に、ウィキペディアおよびウィキメディアのプロジェクト群の将来が安定します。これら寄付基金口の資金は、特定の長期目的のために確保して手をつけません。その点、当年に実施する現在の活動の資金には、ウィキペディアの読者の皆さんからお預かりした個別のご寄付の大部分を使います。
あらゆる種類の組織において、資本運用方針の策定、健全な財務準備金の維持は最善手法と認められています。 ウィキメディア財団理事会は資本運用方針の定義にあたり、たとえ、私たちの活動やウィキメディア提携団体（日本語ページ）の各種グループにおいて計画外の出費や緊急事態または収入不足が発生した場合であっても — 世界的な使命を担う全世界ネットワークとして — ウィキペディアやウィキメディアのプロジェクト群を継続して支援して、ボランティアの皆さんを助けて支えていくことを第一義としました。この方針はまた、支出に充当するキャッシュフローを年間を通して十分に確保することも可能にします。

6. ウィキペディアへのご寄付は、皆さんから私たちへの何よりの応援です。「世界中のあらゆる知識を載せるように」というご声援をありがとうございます。

ウィキペディアのボランティア分布が世界各地に及ぶかどうか、私たちが気にかけている理由でしょうか？ それは、投稿者の姿がそのままウィキペディアに投影されるからです。多種多様なものの見方が集まると、品質が高まり、多くの人の知恵を拾って共有でき、読者の一人ひとりに関連性のある知識を盛り込めるからでもあります。

Join us in a week-long celebration, spanning from 20th–28th November, as we congratulate the remarkable accomplishments of the Wikimedia UK community. It’s often the case that efforts of Wikimedians go unacknowledged, so we’re excited that this campaign will share the pivotal role each member of our community plays in advancing open knowledge.

Over this past year the UK editing community has been as determined as ever to advance open knowledge online. An encyclopaedia is most valuable when it represents us all, and our community consists of individuals from diverse backgrounds and a variety of skills. Their contributions are vital in ensuring the availability of accurate, comprehensive information for people around the world. With each edit they make they strengthen Wikipedia and its sister projects, ensuring they remain a valuable resource for knowledge-seekers everywhere.

Giving Tuesday is the perfect opportunity to highlight some of the activities of our community. The last year has presented the UK editing community with new challenges, which have been met with determination and enthusiasm. We’ve seen new partnerships form, welcomed new groups into editing, and made great strides in our mission to represent all knowledge on Wikimedia.

Earlier this year, Wikimedia UK partnered with the Swadhinata Trust, a London-based Bengali heritage organisation, to enhance the representation of Bengali heritage and culture on Wikimedia platforms. This collaboration began with an introductory online workshop and continued with an in-person workshop, focusing on creating Wikimedia accounts, editing Wikipedia articles, sourcing information, and uploading images to Wikimedia Commons. 

The online workshop was followed by an in-person workshop at the Wikimedia UK office in April 2023, where participants learned how to create an account and to edit Wikipedia articles, as well as how to find reliable sources and avoid conflicts of interest. They also learned how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository that anyone can use. They explored some of the existing articles on Bengali topics and brainstormed for potential contributions.

The collaboration between Wikimedia UK and the Swadhinata Trust illustrates how Wikimedia projects can effectively celebrate and safeguard a wide range of cultural heritages while promoting community involvement. But it also highlights how important working alongside local community organisations is for us as an organisation in order for us to achieve our goals in driving community engagement.

We’ve also seen real progress being made through our Train the Trainer programme. Trainers support volunteers who are keen to deliver Wikipedia editing events. They play a key role in the delivery of Wikimedia UK programmes and extend our work to underrepresented communities, supporting them to become engaged in the Wikimedia projects. They train new and existing editors across the country, in-person, online or in hybrid sessions.

One of our trainers, Johanna Janhonen, began supporting Wikimedia UK last year, helping newcomers gain fundamental skills in the art of editing and learning from other Wikipedia trainers both in-person and remotely.

In April 2023, we began collaborating with an eager group of digital volunteers from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. We initiated a practical three-week introductory program centred around Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. These volunteers came from various backgrounds, spanning from recent school graduates to retirees, each contributing their unique experiences and interests to the project. Over the three weeks, we covered essential editing techniques, addressed common questions about Wiki and cultural heritage, and discussed strategies for creating impactful edits. The program concluded with an online editing event in May 2023.

Throughout this process, we discovered a wealth of valuable content. We were particularly impressed by the significant contributions of local historians, highlighting their outstanding work on ‘Devon Women in Public and Professional Life, 1900–1950: Votes, Voices and Vocations,’ which significantly enriched our collaborative journey.

Nick Moyes, a former museum naturalist, has spent a career introducing people from diverse backgrounds to the wonders of museum artefacts, furthering their understanding of the world around them, and facilitating access to knowledge and information. Upon retiring a decade ago, he saw a new avenue for continuing this mission in Wikipedia. The platform offered an exceptional opportunity to carry on his work. It wasn’t long before he found himself assisting fellow editors in their contributions to Wikipedia. Last year, Wikimedia UK conducted a ‘Train the Trainers’ program, equipping individuals like Nick with the skills needed to conduct introductory group training sessions, whether in person or online.

Initially Nick provided support to other trainers, gradually building the confidence needed to lead his own training sessions on Wikipedia contributions. His sessions were tailored for professional astronomers and science educators in South Africa, and he received invaluable online support from a network of fellow trainers, part of the robust community of trained volunteers cultivated by Wikimedia UK.

• dentonny was selected as OpenStreetMap Belgium’s Mapper of the Month.
• Probelnijs wondered why maps.me is well known while no one seems to know OpenStreetMap.
• Gladys Aguilar, a dedicated language teacher shaping urban mobility in Cochabamba, Bolivia, has been honored as the Trufi Association’s Volunteer of the Month.

Events

• Ilya Zverev released live coverage of the State of the Map EU 2023 event on his Telegram channel. One of the topics he covered was the OpenStreetMap community’s response to OvertureMaps’ presentation.
• Christian Quest, founding member of the French OpenStreetMap local chapter, introduced the Panoramax project during the State of the Map EU 2023 event. Panoramax is a decentralised and federated project to collect and share ground level imagery under open licences.

Education

• Students participating in live UN Mappers courses can obtain a Certificate of Completion, which recognises the skills acquired. Each student receives personal feedback on the OSM edits, which verifies the quality of the mapping. Courses are announced on UN Mappers social media channels and the courses (Basics and Advanced) can be accessed on the UN Maps Learning Hub at any time (although certification is currently only available for live courses).

• Juan Jose Iglesias reported that the OpenStreetMap Analytics service (osm-analytics.org) will soon be shut down. Users are advised to switch to a similar alternative service managed by HeiGIT.
• #geoObserver presented ► the Pathfinding project, which animates the process of routing on a map.
• Oliver Roick has calculated a rough estimate of the cost required to create a global tile server based on PMTiles, which is around $12 per month.
• Raquel Dezidério Souto ► coordinated the technical part of the second stage of the fifth Brazilian Cartographic Olympiad . There is a virtual exhibition ► of the participants’ maps on the theme Amazônia no Mapa (Amazon on the map).
• gislars tooted that the map showing the Berlin Christmas markets has been updated.

OSM in action

• Bldrwnsch is a map by Simon Legner based on OpenStreetMap, which shows objects from the German Wikipedia with an image request. The objects themselves are not part of OSM. Bldrwnsch is open source and uses Typescript and Python code.
• A free online course in English on public transport mapping has been launched by the Trufi Association and Mobility Hub.

• Vikki released a collection of the open data sources that she has used while participating in the #30DayMapChallenge.

Software

• David Karlaš wrote about how to add additional buttons to the OpenStreetMap website using the Tampermonkey browser add-on.

Other “geo” things

• OpenCage has released a geo URI QR code generator. When the QR code is scanned the user’s default mapping application opens to the encoded coordinates.
• The jigsaw puzzle of an OpenStreetMap map of the Belgian territory, featured at the State of the Map Europe 2023 event, has been successfully completed.
